WHAT DID I LEARN
THIS MONTH
MONTH: FEBRUARY 2010
KEY ASPECT / LEARNING
EMOTIONAL, PERSONAL
DEVELOPMENT
&
SOCIAL
1a)
SELF HELP SKILLS
2a) Care for themselves and their personal
safety.
WHAT WE DID AND HOW WE LEARNED
Every month we consult the children on their ideas for what
they would like to learn within a topic. This month the
children determined the topic. They suggested ideas then
voted in their groups for what should be our backdrop for
the month ahead. The majority agreed that “Under the Sea”
would be our topic so we used the book “Bored Claude” as a
starting point.
When learning how to care for ourselves we reinforced
good hand-washing techniques and the importance of
tooth-brushing. We also learned how to keep our bodies
healthy through games using the “Eat Well, Play Well”
resources with Christine and Alison.
Personal safety was addressed through our trips out,
travelling on the bus and walks when moving between our
campuses. We learned about appropriate clothing for
wearing in the snow / rain / sun etc…

such as “The Big Pancake” on the Interactive Whiteboard.
At our group times we undertook a variety of sorting,
matching activities by size, colour, type, fish etc… The
children learned how to categorise these correctly. We also
used real materials such as pebbles, seashells, seaweed etc…
We played “Fishy” games on the Interactive Whiteboard to
sort and count fish into different types. We also used the
“Under the Sea” games on the “Mouse in the House”
software.
We played many different maths games such as fishing

were developed with the “Eat Well, Play Well” resources to
sort healthy and unhealthy food.
EXPRESSIVE & AESTHETIC
ART
1a) Investigate and use a variety of media and
techniques.
Art was developed through working co-operatively to
create many beautiful large pieces of artwork such as
our mermaid, under the sea etc... We used real pieces of
seaweed, shells etc... to add to our creations. We
enjoyed painting and decorating a collection of seashells
and pebbles.
We created our own fish by cutting up paper plates and
decorating these.
MUSIC

percussion.
We celebrated Valentine’s Day by making cards and

The “Graffiti Dance” troop joined us to teach us some
moves while raising funds for Haiti. We also particularly
enjoyed moving to the “Little Yellow Fish” song at our
physical time.

HEALTH & FITNESS

We developed the movements in our fingers and hands
using tools and instruments such as fishing rods at the
maths area and using fishing nets in the water area.
Work in the creative area using small resources such as
pebbles, shells etc…also helped to increase our range of
movements.
Our focus on Health and Wellbeing continued this month
with exciting activities with Christine and Alison.
We rounded off the Health focus enjoying dancing with
the “Graffiti Dance” troop which also raised money
towards Haiti.
We took part in aerobics with songs such as “The Little
Yellow Fish.” We used resources such as bean bags and
parachute games to learn how to cool down effectively
and to work together.
We also enjoyed taking part in obstacle courses in the
gym hall, physical area and outdoors.
