O’Neill Memorial Grant-in-Aid is awarded to a Ph.D. student who is carrying out a thesis project in the field of Stratigraphic Micropaleontology. The grant is dedicated to the memory of Brian J. O’Neill, who for many years was a loyal participant in IWAF meetings and a supporter of the Grzybowski Foundation. The grant supports original scientific research in any subject of Micropaleontology, with preference to projects dealing with foraminifera. §2. Eligibility. The grant is awarded competitively to a Ph.D. student from an eastern European University or research institution who is carrying out a Ph.D. project in the field of Stratigraphic Micropaleontology, preferably for work in the Carpathian area. §3. Application. The student should fill in the application form, have his or her supervisor fill in the back of the form, and then obtain approval from the Head of Department. The completed form should be sent to: Dr. Michael A. Kaminski ([email protected]) The application deadline is December 31. The application will be reviewed by the officers of the Grzybowski Foundation. The decision on the grant will be announced in the spring. §4. Use. The Brian J. O’Neill Memorial Grant-in-Aid is not a stipend. It is a grant that is to be used to fund the cost of a research project. The money is not a merit award or a prize, and is not to be used to supplement a student’s maintenance or living allowance. Allowable expenses include: Travel and accommodation costs connected with field work, Instrument (SEM) time, laboratory consumables, thin sections, microscope slides, the cost of attending a micropalaeontological workshop, the cost of printing and binding a thesis, and a poster to present at a scientific meeting. In years when an International Workshop on Agglutinated Foraminifera or MIKRO-meeting is being held, an additional travel allowance will be given to the candidate to fund the cost of attending the workshop and presenting results. §5. Accountability. (1) By accepting a Brian J. O’Neill Memorial Grant-in-Aid, the student is committed to producing a thesis on the subject of Micropalaeontology. In the event that the student changes the subject of the thesis, or fails to submit a thesis, or fails the thesis examination, the entire amount of the stipend is to be repaid to the Grzybowski Foundation. The student’s supervisor will be held responsible for collecting the repayment in this case. (2) The student must produce a brief (one page) report on his/her results for the “Newsletter of Micropalaeontology”; (3) One hard-bound copy of the thesis must be deposited in the Grzybowski Library, and (4) the Grzybowski Foundation and the Brian J. O’Neill Memorial Grant-in-Aid must be acknowledged both in the thesis and in any publication that results from it. §6. Amount. The amount of the grant is $1,000 USD, plus an additional travel grant (to be determined) to present results at an IWAF or MIKRO meeting.
