PIG DISSECTION OUTLINE
Assignment:
WRITE UP A FORMAL LAB REPORT
 Title section, Purpose, Materials, Observations, Analysis, Discussion and Works Cited
FORMAT: Do observation and analysis for each section… i.e. draw diagrams and answer
questions for external anatomy, then do the same for digestive, then for respiratory, etc.)
You may use digital pictures at any time as long as they are labeled properly. If you chose to draw
diagrams be sure to follow the rules of Drawing Biological Diagrams.
Follow the procedure on p.639-645 in text.
PART 1 – EXTERAL ANATOMY
OBSERVATIONS
-
Draw a lateral view of a fetal pig, labeling the ears, eyes, eyelids, nostrils (nares), umbilical
cord, anus, limbs, and digits (toes). (use the diagram on p. 135 of the manual, but DON’T
TRACE IT!!!) Or use a digital picture labeled properly.
-
Draw the ventral view of your fetal pig, labeling the urogenital opening, the anus, and the
scrotal sac (if it is male). (use p. 640 of your text for reference)
ANALYSIS
1) DIGITS: Compare and contrast digits of pig with those of a human.
2) AGE – calculate the age of your pig using Figure A10.2 on pg 640 in text.
PART 2 – THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
OBSERVATIONS
-
Draw a diagram of the oral cavity cut open (p. 641 textbook, or digital) and label the hard
palate, soft palate, epiglottis, tongue, and incisor/canine teeth.
-
Draw a ventral view of a fetal pig with the digestive system intact (as it appears before being
removed from the body) and label it properly.
ANALYSIS
-
Answer “ANALYZE QUESTION #2” on p. 641
-
What is the purpose/function of the liver? Esophagus? Small intestine? Large intestine?
Pancreas? Stomach? Rectum?
-
Describe the path that food takes from the mouth to the rectum. What happens at each
point?
PART 3 & 4 – THE CIRCULATORY/RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
OBSERVATIONS
-
Draw a diagram of the thoracic cavity cut open (p. 644 textbook or digital) and label it
properly.
ANALYSIS
-
Describe the path that blood takes through a mammals’ heart. Identify every structure it
passes through.
-
Explain the purpose/function of the trachea, lungs, larynx, diaphragm, pleural membrane,
glottis, rib cage.
-
How can we differentiate between the esophagus and the trachea?
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
1. Outline the safety procedures that need to be followed when performing a dissection.
2. Explain why the small intestine is so long, relative to the other organs in the body.
3. The thoracic cavity is surrounded by a stiff cage, while the abdominal cavity has a soft muscular
wall. Explain the significance of this statement.
4. What advantage(s) is/are there to dissecting a fetal pig rather than other mammals? Why are pigs
similar in anatomical structure to humans?
5. What difficulties arose during your dissection? Which system(s) was/were difficult to view in
great detail? Why?
6. What other type of equipment or techniques might be used to improve your dissection?
7. The anatomy of the fetal pig is similar to that of humans, but there are important differences.
a. In what ways do you think we are most similar? Explain your answer.
b. In what ways do you think we are most different? Explain your answer.
8. When people “donate” a kidney, the incision is usually made through the wall of the back rather
than through the front of the abdomen. Based on your dissection, explain why this might be
preferred.
