HGST San Jose Facilities Engineering Mechanical Standard Division 15 Mechanical SECTION 15170 ELECTRIC MOTORS PART 1 1.1 SECTION INCLUDES A. 1.2. 1.3 GENERAL This Section specifies the requirements necessary to furnish and install Electric Motors that are factory installed as part of the equipment and appliances supplied for mechanical equipment as well as field installed motors. RELATED SECTIONS A. This Section shall be used in conjunction with the following other sections and related Contract Documents to establish the total requirements for the referenced electric motors. . 1. The requirements of Section 15010 Basic mechanical Requirements shall be applied in their entirety as if included here. . 2. HGST Electrical Specification, Section 16609- Variable Frequency Drive. REFERENCED CODES AND STANDARDS A. Motors shall conform to the latest standards for design, rating, performance characteristic and service factor in avoidance with applicable codes and standard of the following organizations: NEMA National Electrical Manufacturer's Association ANSI American National Standard Institute IEEE Institute of Electrical And Electronic s Engineers NEC National Electrical Code UL Underwriter's laboratories AFBMA Anti-Friction Bearing Manufacturers Association If conflict exists between referenced codes, the most stringent standard shall be used. 1.4 SUBMITTALS A. 1.5 Conform to all requirements for submittals as described in Section 15010 -- Basic Mechanical Requirements. PRODUCT DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING A. Protect motors stored on site from weather and moisture by maintaining factory cover and suitable weatherproof covering. For extended outdoor storage, remove motors from equipment and store separately. 15170.lwp 1 07/22/2004 HGST San Jose Facilities Engineering Mechanical Standard Division 15 Mechanical PART 2 PRODUCTS 2.0 GENERAL A. Motor types, speed, electrical characteristics and horsepower shall be as indicated and/or scheduled for the individual equipment. B. For motors below 1/2 HP, which will be 120V 1-phase, split phase, capacitor or shaded pole type. All C. D. manufacturer’s complying with the provisions of this specification are acceptable. Motors from 1/2 HP through 200 HP shall be 460V, 3-phase, 60 Hz, squirrel cage induction type. It is the responsibility of each manufacturer to thoroughly review the plans and specifications and determine that their electrical motor(s) conform(s) to the performance requirements and this specification. Inclusion in this list (or approved equal) does not imply or permit any deviation from these requirements. Motors shall have the lowest locked rotor current with good design practice, based on the starting requirement of the driven equipment. In general, the locked rotor current shall not exceed 6 times full load current. 2.01 INSULATION AND SERVICE FACTOR A. Motors shall have Class F insulation with class B temperature rise at full load. Service factor shall be 1.15 at 3300 feet elevation with a 40 degree C ambient temperature. 2.02 BEARINGS A. Provide grease lubricated anti-friction ball bearings with housings equipped with plugged provision for relubrication, rated for minimum AFBMA 9, L-10 life of 200,000 hours. Calculate bearing load with NEMA minimum V-belt pulley with belt centre line at end of NEMA standard shaft extension. Stamp bearing sizes on nameplate. 2.03 EFFICIENCY, RATING AND POWER FACTOR A. B. All poly phase motors 1 horsepower and larger (and all motors used with adjustable frequency drives) shall be NEMA premium standard type in accordance with NEMA testing Standard MG1-12.53a (IEEE Standard No. 112, Test Method B). Motors shall have a nameplate horsepower rating not less than the brake horsepower of the equipment at any point on the operating curve without encroaching on the service factor. Any motor that operates at a service factor greater than unity must be replaced at no additional cost to the Owner. 2.04 TORQUE DESIGN All poly phase motors shall have NEMA design B (Normal Starting Torque, Low Starting Current) characteristics unless otherwise specified. When motors are furnished by the Driven Equipment Vendor with the driven equipment as a package, the torque and speed characteristics shall be the responsibility of the Driven Equipment Vendor. When motors are not furnished by the Driven Equipment Vendor, the required torque and speed characteristics will be supplied by HGST to the Motor Vendor. 15170.lwp 2 07/22/2004 HGST San Jose Facilities Engineering 2.05 Mechanical Standard Division 15 Mechanical VARIABLE FREQUENCY DRIVE MOTOR A. Motor shall be severe duty, premium efficiency squirrel-cage induction motors. It shall be inverter duty and suitable for operation from 15% to 100% speed. All motors shall have Class F insulation with Class B temperature rise at full load. Service factor shall be 1.15 at 3300 ft elevation with a 40 Degree C ambient temperature. B. Motor shall be 460V, 3 phase, 60 Hz, 1800 RPM unless otherwise noted. C. The contractor shall coordinate the VF design with motor manufacturer to ensure the motor is suitable for the VF application. In addition, the contractor shall ensure the new VF. motor will incorporate with the mechanical setups (couplings, frame size, .. etc.) for a working system. 2.06 VARIABLE FREQUENCY DRIVE A. 2.07 Refer to Section 16609 - Variable Frequency Drive. SPACE HEATERS A. Space heater shall be provided for all outdoor motors rated 100 Hp or larger. Space heater voltage shall be 120 V, 1-phase, 60 Hz. The terminal box for space heater power shall be separate from power leads and shall be located in a conveniently accessible position on the outside of motor enclosure. 2.1 ACCEPTABLE SUPPLIERS A. Baldor B. General Electric C. Reliance D. Siemens E. Toshiba 2.2 NAMEPLATE A. Motors shall have stainless steel nameplate with all required NEMA data plus AFBMA bearing numbers. In addition the nameplate shall have the NEMA nominal efficiency rating. 2.3 ENCLOSURE TYPE 15170.lwp 3 07/22/2004 HGST San Jose Facilities Engineering Mechanical Standard Division 15 Mechanical A. Unless otherwise specified, motors in dry areas shall be open drip proof (ODP) per ODP Specification below (Section 2.4). B. Unless otherwised specified, motors located 1) outside or 2) in damp or corrosive indoor areas shall be severe duty motors per TEFC specification below (Section 2.5). C. Motors intended for explosion-proof duty shall be specified on the drawings or in a separate specification. 2.4 SCOPE FOR ODP MOTORS For Open Drip Proof (ODP) 1 to 200 HP, Three phase, 1200, 1800, and 3600 RPM 60 Hz, Squirrel cage Induction motors in integral horsepower frames 143T through 449T. A. B. C. 15170.lwp INSULATION SYSTEM 1. Insulation system employed will be Class F. 2. Moisture resistant (MR) copper magnet wire rated for 200 degrees C or better. 3. Non-hygroscopic polyester high temperature varnish. 4. Temperature rise will be Class B. 5. Unless noted otherwise, motors will be rated for a 40 degrees C maximum ambient temperature. ENERGY EFFICIENCY 1. In all cases, nominal efficiency shall be determined in accordance with the latest version of IEEE Standard 112, Test Method B. 2. Motors shall be NEMA Premium and shall be labeled as NEMA Premium MECHANICAL 1. Unless otherwise specified, motors will be NEMA T-frame sizes 2. Drip-proof, totally enclosed and explosion proof motor frames will be of rugged construction. If aluminum endplates are used, they must have steel inserts in the bearing housings. 3. Bearings will be ball type and bearing housings will be either equipped with grease fittings or plugged provision for lubrication. 4. Bearings will be rated for minimum L-10 life of 20,000 hours assuming bearing load to be calculated with a NEMA minimum pitch diameter pulley per MG1 Table 14-1, so located that the center line of the belt load will be located at the 4 07/22/2004 HGST San Jose Facilities Engineering Mechanical Standard Division 15 Mechanical end of the EMA standard shaft extension. D. WARRANTY 1. E. APPROVALS 1. F. G. All motors in NEMA frames 286T and smaller shall be UL component recognized and/or CSA supported. TESTS AND TEST DATA 1. The insulation system will be tested by procedure outlined in NEMA MG1. 2. Typical performance data on each motor shall be per paragraph 2.7 NOISE LEVELS 1. 2.5 All motors shall carry the standard factory warranty. Sound power levels shll be no greater than the guidelines recommended by NEMA (MG-1-12.49). SCOPE FOR SEVERE DUTY TEFC This portion of the specification covers a 3 phase, severe duty 1 to 200 HP at 1200, 1800, and 3600 RPM, 60 HZ, squirrel cage induction motors in integral horsepower NEMA frames. A. B. 15170.lwp INSULATION SYSTEM 1. Motors will have an epoxy insulation for use in high moisture and corrosive atmospheres. 2. Insulation will be Class F. 3. A fungus proof varnish shall be applied. 4. Moisture resistant (MR) copper magnet wire rated for 200 degrees C or better. 5. Temperature rise will be Class B. 6. Unless otherwise noted, motors shall be rated for 40 degrees C ambient operation. ENERGY EFFICIENCY 1. In all cases, nominal efficiency shall be determined in accordance with the latest version of IEEE Standard 112, Test Method B. 2. Motors shall be NEMA Premium and shall be labeled as NEMA Premium 5 07/22/2004 HGST San Jose Facilities Engineering C. D. MECHANICAL 1. Unless otherwise specified, motors will be NEMA T-frame sizes 2. Motors will be of cast iron construction (frame, endplates, terminal box and fan cover). 3. Bearings will be greaseable. 4. Bearings will be rated for minimum L-10 life of 20,000 hours assuming bearing load to be calculated with a NEMA minimum pitch diameter pulley per MG1 Table 14-1, so located that the center line of the belt load will be located at the end of the NEMA standard shaft extension. 5. External fan will be bronze or plastic to resist corrosion and be non-sparking. 6. Terminal box will contain provision for grounding the motor and will comply with NEMA standards for minimum volume. WARRANTY 1. E. G. All motors in NEMA frames 286T and smaller shall be UL component recognized and/or CSA supported. TESTS AND TEST DATA 1. The insulation system will be tested by procedure outlined in NEMA MG1203. 2. Typical performance data on each motor shall be per paragraph 2.7 NOISE LEVELS 1. 2.6 All motors shall carry the standard factory warranty. APPROVALS 1. F. Mechanical Standard Division 15 Mechanical Sound power levels shall be no greater than the guidelines recommended by NEMA (MG1-12.49). STANDARD REQUIREMENTS A. Motors shall be designed for full-voltage starting and rated for continuous operation unless otherwise specified. Motors shall be able to overcome starting load inertia during starting without injurious heating as well as accelerating the load to rated speed under both rated and 20% reduced voltage conditions. B. Motors shall develop sufficient torque to attain full load speed within 15 seconds when the main plant distribution voltage is 85% of normal. C. Motor fans shall be suitable for rotation in either direction. They shall be accurately balanced before assembly on the shaft. Non-metallic fan housings are not acceptable. 15170.lwp 6 07/22/2004 HGST San Jose Facilities Engineering Mechanical Standard Division 15 Mechanical D. Motors shall be compatible to reduced voltage starting when required. The starting minimum voltage at the motor terminals shall be less than 50% of rated voltage. Reduced voltage starting will be by the auto-transformer or solid state (SCR) method unless otherwise specified. E. Motor shall be capable of withstanding locked rotor current (stall) at rated voltage for 20 seconds without damage to motor windings and connections. F. Motors shall be equipped with removable lifting lugs. G. The stator winding and end turn connections shall be fully braced to withstand repeated full voltage starts. The bracing system shall essentially eliminate coil vibration under these high current conditions as well as during normal operation. H. Motor drawings shall include the location of the junction box, dimensions, type of enclosure, weight of motor and electrical data such as horsepower, RPM, voltage, phase, and frequency. I. Motor Conduit Boxes 1. Cast boxes shall be provided on 200 hp and below. Boxes shall be diagonally split cast iron construction with NPT threaded conduit holes. 2. Motors 200 HP and larger may have fabricated steel junction boxes. Material shall be 10 gauge minimum thickness. 3. Conduit boxes shall be completely neoprene gasketed to prevent the entrance of moisture. Motor terminal box shall be of cast iron construction and one size larger than NEMA Standard MG-1 for termination of main power cable with ground wire. 4. J. Provide a UL listed clamp-type ground lug inside of the conduit box. K. Conduit box shall be sized to meet or exceed the requirements of Section 430.12 of the National Electric Code. L. Motor leads within the conduit box shall be permanently numbered and of nonwicking-type insulation. 2.7 Motor Inspection and Testing A. All motors shall be tested in accordance with the Motor Vendor’s routine test procedures per NEMA MG1-12.55.2. Vibration tests shall also be performed on each motor and will be measured in accordance with NEMA MG1-12.08. B. Prototype test certificates shall be submitted for the following tests: Motor efficiency Temperature Rise Starting torque and other motor characteristics 15170.lwp 7 07/22/2004 HGST San Jose Facilities Engineering Mechanical Standard Division 15 Mechanical Sound C. Two (2) reproducible of the “Routine” factory test data sheets and prototype test certificates shall be furnished to the purchaser within two weeks after completion of the tests. In addition, a copy of the test results will be shipped with the motor. PART 3 EXECUTION 3.1 START UP Follow manufacturer's written instructions including the following: A. Properly aligned motor with the driven equipment. B. C. Lubricate motor prior to start up. Check for proper motor rotation prior to connecting to the driven equipment. Checking for rotation with driven equipment connected can damage the motor or driven equipment. Correct if backwards. D. Check electrical connections for correctness and tightness prior to starting. E. Rotate motor by hand to check for free movement prior to starting. F. All guards shall be in place prior to starting. G. Check mounting hardware for tightness prior to starting. H.
