1. MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB

The Associate Head of Professions will work with the Head of Integrated Services and the
Associate Director of Nursing & AHPs to provide line management & professional leadership
to all the inpatient areas within their geographical setting.

They will line manage the Integrated Service Matrons within their geographical setting

A key professional leadership role within the division with a Multi-Disciplinary remit, they will
work as part of the senior Nursing & AHP leadership teams in the ISD and the Trust, and with
local service management teams, to ensure safe, equitable, effective, efficient, & timely
services are provided within the ISD.

They will work with the Associate Director of Nursing & AHPs to establish & embed a robust
quality & governance process to provide assurance to the ISD board in relation to clinical
quality & safety standards within the division.

They will actively support and deliver the implementation of the Frontline strategy, the 6 Cs
and other relevant national strategies. Undertake Trust-wide and Division-wide
responsibilities as agreed for up to 20% of time available.

KEY RESULT AREAS
Through senior operational & professional leadership of the services outlined within the ISD, this role
will discharge its responsibilities in the following ways:
Clinical Quality & Leadership

Responsible to the Head of Integrated Services and accountable to the Associate Director of
Nursing & AHPs they will effectively manage and clinically lead the Inpatient wards within
their geography.

Line management of the Integrated Service Community Matron responsible for the Integrated
Service Teams within your specific geography including accountability for the clinical
standards of those teams

They will ensure these services run efficiently at all times identifying and managing risks that
occur taking action to mitigate those risks with particular focus on patients and staff safety
and quality care standards.

To provide a visible, accessible and authoritative presence within agreed settings, working
clinically alongside staff and being available to patients, their families, key partners offering
assistance, advice and support where required.

To ensure that areas within your remit provide high quality joined up care for patients &
service users with both acute and long term physical and mental health conditions.

Embedding the principles of service user recovery and wellbeing including involvement in care
planning.

They will provide clear leadership to clinical staff within the outlined settings implementing
the Frontline Strategy, and the 6Cs within these areas.

The Head of Nursing & AHPs will act as a positive role model working alongside staff in the
delivery of patient centred care.

This post will work with Integrated Service Managers to create a culture of learning that is
based on a need for continuous improvement.

They will embed person centred assessment and holistic care planning that involves the
patient and their carer/family in setting realistic goals for their independence

Working with the Associate Director of Nursing & AHPs they will embed a robust quality and
governance process including quality accreditation for teams that shares best practice and
identifies areas for improvement and development.

Working with the Business Manager & Integrated Service Manager they will ensure accurate
quality data is used to provide assurance to the ISD board in relation to key performance
indicators around quality & safety of patient care.

To actively engage & involve with service users & patients in both care delivery and service
redesign ensuring we use feedback to improve services.

To work with the Integrated Service Managers to create a reputation for quality and to
develop productive relationships with stakeholders that is focussed on clinical quality
standards.

To lead regular reviews in relation to quality and safety within the division, reporting findings
through the local quality and governance forums and up to ISD board.

To focus on quality indicators to include but not limited to; staffing, falls , pressure ulcers,
suicides, self-harm, infections, managing violence and aggression and complaints and
triangulate various data to identify trends, themes and hotspots where corrective action may
need to be taken.

To establish networks and partnerships with other agencies for collaborative working

To maintain professional registration / CPD through clinical competency and embed Clinical
Supervision

To work with teams to ensure joint working with Community & Primary Care Services to
provide joined up services that work together to ensure appropriate lengths of stay and timely
discharges.

To promote the use of research and evidence based practice within the division.

Create a culture of privacy and dignity that says sorry when things go wrong and take action to
respond to feedback to improve.

To ensure that risks are assessed, identified and managed proactively in line with the needs of
service patients, escalating where appropriate as per policy

To work with the Head of Integrated Services and Associate Director of Nursing & AHPs to
ensure robust quality & governance structures are in place within the division.
Ensure audits are undertaken to improve outcomes for patients and ensure that
recommendations are used to change practice
To ensure quality improvement skills are developed and used in the division to provide
continuous improvement and learning.

 To ensure staff are used to the best effect whatever their professional background
 Ensure staff are competent and confident to deliver person centred care within agreed
settings for both physical and mental health
 To ensure the cost effective and efficient use of resources within allocated budgets ensuring
services are not undermined by ineffective budgeting.

PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT PLANNING
The Trust is committed to providing a high quality service through the effective management and

process ensures that the Trust is able to achieve its key aims of delivering cost effective, high quality

STATUTORY AND MANDATORY TRAINING
The Trust will assess the requirements for Statutory and Mandatory training for all new staff prior to
commencement and aims to ensure that all Statutory and Mandatory training requirements are
completed before staff start their full duties. All required Statutory and Mandatory training must be
completed within the first three months of staff start date and refresher training must also be
undertaken on a regular basis and in accordance with the Trust’s policy.

The Trust is committed to safeguarding children, young people and vulnerable adults within its care.
As an employee you are accountable to ensure that you know how to respond when you are
concerned for the safety of a child, young person or vulnerable adult. The Trust will support you in

young people and leads for vulnerable adults, who can be contacted for guidance and who provide

INFECTION PREVENTION AND CONTROL
The Trust has designated the prevention and control of infection and the full implementation of the
Code of Practice (2008) as a core component in the organizations clinical governance, managing risk
and patient safety programmes. All employees are expected to follow consistently high standards in
the prevention and control of infection, especially with reference to hand hygiene, adherence to
dress/uniform code and for clinical staff all procedures involving aseptic technique. Be aware of and
follow all Trust Infection Control guidelines and procedures relevant to their work. Participate in

This Trust operates a Smoke-free policy. This means that smoking is not permitted anywhere within
owned or leased premises, including within their grounds and within owned or leased vehicles. In the
interests of promoting responsible healthcare all staff are to refrain from smoking when off-site in
uniform or wearing an identifying NHS badge in any public place. The policy also applies to all staff
employed by the Trust at any location they may work, whether within or external to the Trust’s
premises. The policy contains further details including support facilities; subsequent failure to comply
with this policy may result in disciplinary action.
