Mitosis Lab. Name__________________________________ Date_______________________
Each student should turn in a separate report.
In a growing plant root, the cells at the tip are constantly dividing. You will observe cells going through
mitosis in both plant roots and in animal cells.
1. Observe the onion root tip under low power. Write your observations below.
2. Switch to medium power. Describe what you see.
3. Change to the high power objective. Focus well with the fine adjustment only. Adjust your diaphragm for
the clearest view. Sketch a cell in each of the following stages and describe:
Interphase
Prophase
Metaphase
Anaphase
Telophase
Cytokenesis
Choose 3 rows of root tip to observe.
Have someone help you record how many cells are in each phase:
Interphase__________
telophase_________
prophase_________ metaphase_________ anaphase________
Determine the percentage of cells found in each stage.
Interphase__________
telophase_________
prophase_________ metaphase_________ anaphase________
Answer:
1. Cells spend most of their time in what stage?
2. What seems to be the shortest stage?
3. What would happen if a cell skipped metaphase?
4. If you were a cell, what would your favorite phase be and why?
Observe fish mitosis.
What differences do you see in fish mitosis vs. onion mitosis?
