Hammond Project – Food Chain/Web Writing
You are to write two separate paragraphs explaining the use of food chains and food webs in understanding
interactions in ecosystems.
Your audience is a new 7th grader who needs to catch up with what you already know! Assume this student has
no prior knowledge. You will need to explain clearly and teach them the important vocabulary.
Use organisms from your project as examples.
First Paragraph:
What is a food chain? (What does a food chain show you?)
What begins and ends a food chain? Why?
What do the arrows show you? How do you know which way they should point?
Explain all vocabulary (producer, 1st level consumer, 2nd level consumer, (etc), decomposer
herbivore, carnivore, omnivore)
What happens if you remove an organism? Why?
Second Paragraph:
What is a food web? What does it show you?
What happens if you remove an organism? Why? (Be thorough!)
Explain the relationship between biodiversity and the health of the ecosystem.
