Island hopping, adopted by General MacArthur and Admiral Chester Nimitz, was the policy of attacking and capturing certain key islands along the coast near the Far East. In island hopping, captured islands were used as military bases for leapfrogging to islands closer to the Philippines and to Japan. How did the Great Depression lead to World War II? The Great depression had hit Germany especially hard. Businesses failed and millions of people had lost their jobs. Germans rallied around Adolf Hitler who gained popularity by exploring people’s fears about the economy. During the Depression, many Japanese suffered lack of jobs and food shortages. As a result, military leaders rose to power in the early 1930’s. These leaders thought they would solve Japan’s problems by expanding Japanese power in Asia, so they invaded Manchuria. Within three years, Japan signed a pact of alliance with Germany and Italy.
