Lesson Plan—World War II Pacific Theater
Objectives: Understand the United States strategies in World War II in the Pacific
Theater. Students will understand the island hopping methods used by the United States
and why they were necessary.
Anticipatory Set: Students will go through the virtual tour of the Pacific Island campaigns
during World War II. This will be presented through Google Earth.
Communication: Students will understand the island hopping methods used by the United
States and why they were necessary.
Input: I will illustrate the importance of the major battles of the Pacific Theater for the
students. The tour will allow them to see pictures and geographic areas of all of the major
islands. I think this will help them put into context why these places are significant in our
history.
Modeling: Show the students how I would take one of the battles and use Google Earth to
illustrate the advantages and disadvantages that were present on the islands.
Guided Practice: Allow students to choose one battle during the island hopping campaign
and use Google Earth to find advantages and disadvantages.
Independent Practice: Complete guided practice for homework. Write up a 1-2 page
paper on the advantages and disadvantages for both the US and the Japanese that came
from fighting on the island.
