agreement(+), one disagreement (-), and Chapter 7 Section 1: The Rise of Nationalism
one question (?)
Another example of a compromise in U.S.
history is the Great Compromise of 1787.
In this compromise, the two plans for a
new U.S. government were combined,
resulting in the government system we
have today.
P: I think that the North and South, two
regions of the United States with very
different life-styles and opinions, will have
a large disagreement about slavery,
resulting in the civil war.
A: I agree that the Missouri Compromise
was a fair deal because both sides got an
equal share of states and the balance they
tried so hard to keep was preserved.
D: I disagree with the whole system that
the United States was running on. It
depended on the balance of free and slave
states. In other words, it depended on
slavery, and in order to get rid of this flaw,
there would have to be a large conflict.

Definition:
The Missouri Compromise was an agreement that
admitted Maine and Missouri into the Union –Maine as a
free state, Missouri as a slave state.
Uproar over the Missouri Territory applying to be a
state:
Missouri becoming a state would upset the balance of 11
slave states and 11 free states in the Union. A balance was
necessary because of the need of equal representation in
the U.S. Senate.
This event was called a compromise because….
In return for Missouri becoming a slave state, the free
states gained Maine, maintaining the balance of an equal
number of slave and free states.
The North gained Maine but
gave up getting Missouri as a free state.
Q: How did Southerners react to slavery
being banned above 36 degrees latitude?
Why does this point mark the southern
boundary of Missouri, even though
Missouri was a slave state?
The South gained Missouri
but gave up slavery north of Missouri’s southern border.
Importance of this event: The Missouri Compromise allowed two new states to enter the Union:
Missouri as a slave state, and Maine as a free state, in order to maintain balance between free and
slave states.
What is the role of compromise in a self-governing society, considering that many convictions are deeply held
but not shared by everyone in the community? Is some level of compromise necessary to the survival of a
democratic republic?
The role of a compromise is to avoid conflict and to attempt to satisfy everyone it may concern.
Compromises are definitely necessary for a democratic republic, because the people are the rulers, and since the
people consist of more than one person, there will obviously be conflicting opinions. Compromises try to
incorporate everybody’s ideas and distribute them equally.
