INTRODUCTION This course is designed for students who have prior theoretical knowledge of power engineering and wish to expand their understanding of the practicalities of electricity distribution and the factors underpinning them. All Modules reflect contemporary practice in electricity distribution utilities and are extensively illustrated with both photographs and diagrams. Each contains a number of questions, many in the form of design projects, on which the student will receive a marked assessment and constructive feedback. Students may choose to undertake one or more Modules and a Certificate of Achievement will be awarded upon satisfactory completion of each module. However the Certificate of Competence in Electricity Distribution will be awarded to those completing all six modules. Modules will be supplied electronically in pdf format, either over the internet or on CD-ROM dispatched to the student’s home or company address, as preferred. Students must return questions for assessment within six weeks, after which the following Module will be dispatched, if the student has elected to undertake more than one. COURSE TUTOR The course tutor enjoyed a long career in a large UK electricity utility, where he obtained experience at all levels from junior operational engineer through to senior manager. Over the last ten years he has worked as a consultant overseas and in the process industries. Module 2 Power Cables Early cables, Cable basics, Early twentieth century LV cables, Early twentieth century HV cables, Electric insulation versus thermal insulation – oil filled designs, Polymeric and elastomeric insulated and jacketed low voltage cables, Service cables, Polymeric and elastomeric insulated and jacketed high voltage cables, Cable current rating, Single versus three core cable – bonding, Selection of cable route. Module 3 Overhead Lines Advantages and disadvantages of overhead line versus cable, Types of support, Earthed and unearthed construction, Mechanical design of overhead lines, conductor spacing – wind induced oscillation, Conductor characteristics, Conductor current rating, Conductor sag and tension, Route selection, Profiling, Insulators. Module 4 HV Switchgear The role of HV switchgear in networks, Switch fuses, Current interruption in circuit breakers, Current interruption by mineral oil, Current interruption by vacuum, Current interruption by SF6, Puffer type SF6 circuit breakers, Vacuum in SF6 circuit breakers, Symmetrical and asymmetrical conditions, Switchgear ratings, Locking and interlocking devices, Testing for internal arc fault, Withdrawable and fixed pattern switchgear, Switchgear ancillaries, Measurement CTs & VTs, Cable terminations, Bay controllers, Switchgear testing. Module 5 Power Transformers Distribution and system transformers, Transformer characteristics, Star and delta connections, Transformer tappings, Parallel operation, Oil and resin insulation, PCBs, Buchholz protection, Neutral earthing, Iron and Copper Losses, Noise. Module 6 System Protection Mechanical and electromagnetic protection relays, Overcurrent and earth fault protection, Fuses, Pilot wire protection systems, Unit protection systems, Discrimination, Auto reclosing of overhead lines, Protection of LV systems.
