INTRODUCTION
The world environment day was established by
UN General Assembly in 1972 to mark the
opening of Stockholm Conference on the
human environment, which is being celebrated
in June month every year. In 2013 the World
Environment Day is celebrated under the
theme Think, Eat, Save, which primarily focus
on anti-food waste and food loss across the
world. This is to encourage people to reduce
their "foodprint”.
Food security plays an important role in
improving the resilience of communities and
individuals, especially in the face of climate
change induced stresses on livelihoods. Food
security cannot be understood in isolation
from other developmental questions such as
social protection, sources of income, rural and
urban
development,
changing
household
structures, health, access to land, water and
inputs, retail markets, or education and

THE STATUS QUO
According to the UN Food and Agriculture
Organization (FAO), every year 1.3 billion tons
of food is wasted. This is equivalent to the
same amount produced in the whole of subSaharan Africa. At the same time, 1 in every 7
people in the world go to bed hungry and
more than 20,000 children under the age of 5
die daily from hunger.
In South Africa, between 1999 and 2008 the
prevalence of food insecurity appeared to
have been reduced by more than half from
52.3% to 25.9%. The cause of hunger and
malnutrition is not due to a shortage of food
but rather an inadequate access to food by
certain
categories
of
individuals
and
households in the population. This means that
even when food is available in a market it does
mean that is accessible to every household
(HSRC, 2004).
However, the proportion of people at risk of
experiencing
food
insecurity
remained
unchanged. The reduction was noted in both
urban and rural areas where food insecurity
decreased from 42.0% to 20.5% and from
62.0% to 33.1%.
