CRYSTAL MAZE INSTRUCTIONS
The Barracudas and the Stingrays are working independently for this task but the instructions are
the same for both groups.
Split your group into two teams – if you like they can make up a team name.chant etc as they go
through. The teams are competing against each other for prizes.
The Crystal Maze is split into 4 zones and the objective is to complete challenges in each of the first 3
zones to win Crystals that equate to time on the Easter Egg Hunt in the final zone. Zones are as
follows:
Medieval Zone = Arts and Crafts room
Futuristic Zone = Piranha/Stingray baseroom terrapin
Ocean Zone = Dance and Drama
Aztec Zone = gym for Barracudas, Main Hall for Stingrays
At each zone a challenge is completed and the grou can win a Crystal worth 5minutes on the Easter
Egg Hunt (ignore one sheet which says 10! I miscaluculated the time!!) Instructions for the task and
all materials are found in the zones. Please follow the time table below:

MEDIEVAL
ZONE
Setting
Back in Medieval times when technology was sparse, transportation of fragile items was a challenge
to say the least. In this challenge we are taking ourselves back to these times....
Task
In your group you have 20mins to create a structure which will support an egg dropped from the
height of the building. You have been provided with the following items:






2 balloons
2 bin bags
4 pieces of paper
A roll of sellotape
3 strips of Gaffa tape
6 straws
How to win a Crystal
If your group successfully drops an egg without it breaking you will be awarded a Crystal worth
10minutes of Easter Egg Hunt time.
Pointers
Have one group in each baseroom so they cannot steal each others ideas.
After 20minutes call STOP and take the group up the stairs opposite the boys toilets and use the first
classroom to drop the egg contraption out of. Then take the group down to check and award them a
crystal if successful.
FUTURISTIC
ZONE
Setting
After discovering a time machine you have found yourself transported in time to the year 3000
where everything is very different. You meet an Architect who asks for your help in designing a
prototype for a new builging. They need to build strong but flexible towers to help withstand
earthquakes but it is important to make them both stong and tall.
Task
Using the materials provided you must make a tower that is the height of a table but strong enough
to hold the Crytal for a full 30seconds.

Spaghetti
Marshmallows
How to win a Crystal
Once the group has created a struture they may test it by holding the crystal on it for a timed
30seconds. There is no limit to how many attempts a group may have but the activity must last no
longer than half an hour in total.
Pointers
Height and time may be adjusted to suit capability of group as necessary.
OCEAN
ZONE
Setting
You were on a cruise in the Pacific Ocean when suddenly you hit an iceberg and your ship collapsed.
The group is now stranded but they can see land not too far away. They must reach land quickly
because the water is shark infested...
Task
Using the floatation devices provided (white paper in plastic wallets!) you must get across to the
land (blue sheet) where you will find your Crystal. Troublle is...there are not enough floatation
devices for everyone and if a floatation device has no foot on it then a hungry shark will come and
eat it so be careful!
How to win the Crystal
All members of the group must get safely across and fit on the land to reach the Crystal. If anybody
falls in the water the group must start again! Max 20mins for this activity.
Pointers
For older kids use less floatation devices and for younger kids use more. You can always start with
less and increase later...
AZTEC
ZONE
EASTER EGG HUNT!
Try to make sure each group has the full 30minutes – if they haven’t succeeded with the Crystals
award bonus time for anything you like....
Explain the rules first – each group only collects one colour of eggs...in the gym the trampoline is out
of bounds and in the main hall the stage is out of bounds.
Let them go find their aggs....
All eggs have points on the back so after their allotted time the groups get together to collect up
how many points they will get and decide the winning team.
If there is any time left pver then a game can be played in the main hall...or for Barracudas you could
play ‘Steal or Share’ taken from the hit TV show Goldenballs. You independently ask the groups if
they would like to steal or share their points with the other group. If both groups say share,
everyone is a winner, if one group says share and one says steal then whichever group steals gets
the other teams points and they win, if both groups say steal then no one wins.
Prizes for winning group will be awarded in the award ceremony session 6.
