ABOUT THE WELLINGTON ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY
The Wellington Astronomical Society is an established, incorporated society for anyone in
Wellington who is interested in astronomy. Our members include many experienced and
distinguished astronomers, as well as beginners who want to learn more. Membership comes
from a diverse range of age groups and occupations, with emphasis being on the enjoyment of
looking at the cosmos.
The society produces eleven newsletters each year, and we hold monthly meetings (1st
Wednesday of the month at 7:30pm) in the Crater Observatory, Kelburn, Wellington.
Meetings usually host a guest speaker, and talks assume that the audience has little or no
knowledge of the topic. Afterwards, people can stay for a light supper and often learn from or
help others with similar interests.
A short meeting of members who are interested in Research Astronomy is held at 6:30pm on
the same night. At present our main topics are Occultation and Variable Star Observing but
other topics come up from time to time. This is a good time to ask technical questions.
We aim to get people actively involved with learning and taking part in astronomy through a
fun, social and enthusiastic atmosphere. We encourage the attendance of activities and
monthly star parties, and with the help of members we sometimes hold public events. We
also have our own telescopes that can be hired out to members.
We are a helpful and friendly crowd, and we welcome all who are interested in astronomy.
