Forestry in Canada
Products that forests supply are:
- lumber and plywood to build wooden objects
- wood shingles
- veneer (thin shaved wood glued on cheaper wood)
- doors and other millwork
-paper, pulp, cardboard and particleboard
What is the difference between renewable and sustainable?
Renewable: a resource that can be replaced, such as a tree
Sustainable: something that can be renewed, such as a forest
Businesses that produce forest products.
- saw mills
- paper plants & cardboard box manufacturers
- plywood, veneer and particleboard plants
- home builders, e.g. framers, stair makers and patio firms
- cabinet makers
- wood shingle supply companies
- hockey stick manufacturers
Methods of Harvesting Forests
1.Clear Cutting - Loggers remove every tree and leave a barren landscape.
When replanted, the new forest grows uniformly in species and size.
2. Shelter wood Cutting
Involves clear-cutting only part of an old growth forest. Small groups of
seed bearing trees are left so the area will regenerate.
3. Selective Cutting
Only mature trees of the desired size, type or quality are cut down.
Forestry Issues
1. Too few trees are replanted? = Soil erosion.
2. Clogged Rivers
3. Water and Air Pollution
4. Aerial Spraying
5. Forest Fires
6. Destruction of Wildlife Habitat
