Facts/Information from Text
14.
During the 17th Century, the religious Reformation and
Counter Reformation led to a conflict which eventually
encompassed all nations in Europe, known today as the “Thirty
Years War.”
15.
By the late 17th Century, Paris was rivaling Rome as
Europe’s art center.
16.
In the Latter half of the 17th Century, a revival of
Renaissance techniques and philosophy emerged known as the new
“Classicism.”
17.
The main proponent of the new “Classicism” was the French
artist who trained in Italy, Nicolas Poussin.
18.
A conflict of ideas basically pitting the values of drawing
versus color which dates back to the Renaissance and it’s
respective representatives, Michelangelo and Titian, reemerged in
the Baroque with it’s new representatives, Poussin and Rubens.
19.
By far the largest enterprise of Louis the XIV, was the palace
complex just outside Paris, begun in 1669, known as the “Palace of
Versailles.”
20.
The artistic period known as the “Rococo” roughly
corresponds to the life and rule in France of Louis XV, 17101774.
21.
The difference between the “Baroque” and the “Rococo”
may be characterized by one word, “fantasy.”
22.
Perhaps the most famous and influential painter of the
Rococo, was a follower of Rubens, Jean-Antoine Watteau.
23.
The painting which most accurately reflects the fantasy and
eroticism of the Rococo style is by Jean-Honore Fragonard
entitled, “The Swing.”
24.
The full elegance and charm of the Rococo is best
represented in the intimate spaces of early 18th Century interiors.
25.
The last and most refined stage of Italian illusionistic ceiling
decoration can be seen in the works of “Tiepolo.”
