Mon 19th January 2015: Afternoon Industry Briefing by the delegation followed by questions
and networking in central London (venue and details tbc).
Opportunities:
Due to the country’s size (Saudi Arabia is approx 9.5 times the size of the UK), long
distances between major cities and limited other modes of public transport, aircraft are relied
upon heavily for internal travel.
Furthermore, some 8 million pilgrims travel through Jeddah and Medina every year on their
way to Makkah, and demand will continue to increase as the Saudi population is expected to
reach 39 million in 2020 and 47 million in 2030.
There are four international and 26 regional/domestic airports in Saudi Arabia with a total
throughput in 2008 of 39 million passengers; a number which is forecast to rise to 45m by
2017. The General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) is responsible for managing US$15
billion investment the government has earmarked for airport development and expansion
plans over the next three years.
Opportunities are expected to be forthcoming at Saudi’s regional airports and continued
future plans for the three hubs (Jeddah, Medina and Riyadh). There are also airport security
requirements across the Kingdom.
In summary these development plans are:





Completion of the new Jeddah Airport Terminal
Expansion work at the Medina Airport Terminal
New terminal followed by expansion of old terminal at Riyadh Airport
Progressive redevelopment of all 26 domestic airports
Airport security across all airports
