Class Schedule
1/4-1/7
Reminders:
 This week you need to review your notes from the last unit of fall semester on the Middle East:
Southwest Asia (Sumerians, Akkadians, Amorites (Old Babylonians), Hebrews (including
Judaism), Phoenicians, Assyrians and Persians) and North Africa (Old-New Kingdoms Egypt)
 Bring your Middle East notes from last semester to class with you this week! You will need
them to prepare for the essay.
 Correct and save your Atlas—you will add to it this semester!
 Don’t forget to study your notes and vocabulary nightly!
Tuesday 1/4: You will receive the course outline for second semester. We will begin a review of the ancient
Middle East and Egyptian civilizations which will be the subject of the essay you will write in class on
Friday.
Reading:
 No new reading for today—you should review your SPRITE notes and vocabulary on previous
ancient Middle Eastern and Egyptian civilizations.
Wednesday 1/5-Thursday 1/6: We will discuss the basic rules of essay writing in Pre AP World History
Friday 1/7: We will write a comparison essay in class—be prepared—bring your outline!

Reminders:
 ESSAY rewrites are due on Friday 1/21—make sure they are on time and marked-up before
you get to class on Friday!
 Start learning the map of South Asia—we will have the map quiz on Friday 1/28!!
 The plan at this point is to have the test over ancient South Asia on Thursday 2/10.
 Don’t forget to review your notes and vocabulary nightly
Tuesday 1/18: Self and peer evaluation of essays—rewrite with corrections from peer reviews. Essays are
due at the BEGINNING of class on Friday 1/21. MAKE SURE you MARK- UP your essay BEFORE
you get to class on Friday (i.e. Thursday night). I will not take your essay if it is not marked-up! You
may type the rewrite if you want (but you do not have to). Begin map work of South Asia.
Wednesday 1/19: Essential Question for Discussion: How did geography impact the development of
civilizations in the Indus River Valley? Map Work—South Asia
Reading:
 Read the typed physical geography notes over South Asia that you received in class on
Monday
Thursday 1/20-Friday 1/21: Essential Questions for Discussion: What are the challenges facing those
who wish to study the Indus River Valley (or Harappan) Civilization? What were the major
achievements of the Indus Valley (or Harappan) Civilization?
Reading in Text for Thursday:
 Chapter 2, Section 3 pages 44-49
 Remember to take SPRITE+G notes. Once you’ve read, REVIEW your notes and determine
which SPRITE questions you can answer. Develop a general statement answering each of
those questions. Then use the details from the reading as evidence to support your general
statement. This is how you should take your SPRITE notes EVERY TIME you read this
semester. It will take you more time to complete the homework assignment, but really
THINKING about what you read will aid in retention and understanding (try to take notes like
you are writing an essay)!! Don’t forget to define and highlight vocabulary in your notes as
you read.

 Continue learning the map of South Asia—we will have the quiz this Friday 1/28!!
 The plan at this point is to have the test over ancient South Asia on Thursday 2/10.
 Don’t forget to review your notes and vocabulary NIGHTLY!
Monday 1/24: Essential Question for Discussion: How did the Indo-European Aryan migrations into
India impact the culture of South Asia?
Reading in Text:
 Chapter 3, Section 1 pages 61-65
 Take a new set of SPRITE notes on the Aryans (start reading at the beginning of the section
“The Indo-Europeans” but take notes mostly from “Aryans Transform India” on pages 63-65.
Reviewing the Hittites will do you good.
Tuesday 1/25-Wednesday 1/26: Essential Question for Discussion: What are the beliefs and practices
of Hinduism?
Reading in Text:
 Chapter 3, Section 2 pages 66-67 (stop at “New Religions Arise”)—take thorough SPRITE
notes Hinduism from the text Monday night!
 In class on Tuesday add notes from the Spodek book to the notes you took Monday night—
concentrating on 1. Origins, 2. Beliefs and practices, 3. Religious texts
Thursday 1/27: Continue discussion of Hinduism
Reading from Handout: “Life, Death, and the Gods on Aryan India” Answer the Questions for
Analysis in the middle of each section. Be prepared to DISCUSS the primary source excerpts from
the Vedas, Upanishads, and Bhagavad-Gita in class today.
Friday 1/28: MAP QUIZ—SOUTH ASIA—study the physical and political maps—you will not need
to know the historical maps until the exam!

Reminders:
 The test on the ancient South Asia will be Thursday 2/10.
 Review your notes and vocabulary nightly—don’t forget you will have an unannounced
vocabulary quiz soon.
 Make sure you have a detailed understanding of Hinduism before we start Buddhism or you
will mix the two religions up! They have many similar ideas.
Monday 1/31-Tuesday 2/1: Essential Question for Discussion: What are the beliefs and practices of
Buddhism?
Reading in Text for Monday:
 Chapter 3, Section 2 pages 67-71 (start at “New Religions Arise” and read the rest of the
section). It’s pretty general, but it may aid you in understanding Buddhism and how it
compares to Hinduism.
 In class on Monday add notes from the Spodek book to the notes you took Sunday night—
concentrating on 1. Origins, 2. Beliefs and practices, 3. Religious texts
Wednesday 2/2: Continue discussion of Buddhism.
Reading:
 Primary Source handout “Challengers of Caste: The Mahavira and the Buddha”. Read it ALL
and answer the Questions For Analysis for source 18 and 19—you may need to refer back to
the primary source readings we did on Hinduism to answer some of the questions. Our
discussion about Buddhism will incorporate a discussion of these questions.
Thursday 2/3-Friday 2/4: Essential Question for Discussion: What were the major contributions to
civilization of the Mauryan Empire? We will also discuss the Conrad Demarest Model of Empires as it
relates to the Mauryan Empire.
Reading for Thursday:
 Chapter 7, Section1 pages 189-191 (read up to “The Gupta Empire is Established). Get
whatever SPRITE information you can about the Mauryan Empire from the book.
 Handout received in class on Wednesday.
 Take a new set of SPRITE notes on the Mauryans: COMBINE the information from the text
and the handout
 Make sure you define the vocab words that are found in the handout as well as the textbook—
some of the words are just in the handout—not in the blue book.
Reading for Friday:
 Primary Source handout “India in the Age of Empires”. Read it ALL and answer the
Questions For Analysis for source 37 “ROCK AND PILLAR EDICTS” you will only be able
to answer questions 1-4.

 Review your notes and vocabulary each night—don’t wait to the last minute to study!!
Monday 2/7-Wednesday 2/9: Essential Question for Discussion: What were the major contributions to
civilization of the Gupta? We will also discuss the Conrad Demarest Model of Empires as it relates to the
Gupta Empire.
Reading for Monday:
 Chapter 7 Section 1 pages 191-192 and Section 2; pages 193-199. Don’t forget to look at the
Hindu and Buddhist Art on pages 198-199—and add any important information from here to
your notes.
 Handout received in class on Friday—this is important it has important information not found
in the book!
 A short handout on “Science in Ancient India”—most of these notes will be added to your
intellectual Gupta notes.
 Take a new set of SPRITE notes on the Gupta: COMBINE the information from the text and
the handouts—add vocabulary to your notes on the Gupta.
Reading for Tuesday:
 Primary Source handout—read the entire handout and answer the Questions for Analysis for
source 38 “THE LAWS OF MANU” you will only be able to answer questions 1-6.
Thursday 2/10: Test Ancient India—the test will be over the Indus Valley civilization, Aryan migrations
and impact, the religions of Hinduism and Buddhism, and the Mauryan and Gupta Empires.
Friday 2/11: We will go over the South Asia Test
