Notes on Sparta and Athens Fight
Athenian Navy- Very strong navy that defeated the Persians. Continued to
protect Greece from outside threats.
Delian League- an alliance in which Athens was the strongest member. Citystates agreed to defend each other and to protect sea trade. To pay for
defense, each city-state gave money (kept on island of Delos).
Athenians began to use money from alliance to finance buildings in Athens. No
members could quit; others were forced to join and pay.
Peloponnesian League- alliance of other Greek city-states that included Sparta.
Many worried about the power of Athens; Sparta declared war
Peloponnesian War ( 431 BC
to 404 BC

War between Sparta and Athens. Sparta won in the end, but Greece was weakened.
Sparta‛s tactics v. Athens‛s tactics:
Spartan army surrounded Athens, burned their crops.
Athens had ships bring them supplies and attacked Spartan allies.
Plague broke out in Athens, killing one third of population.
Truce ended first phase- Peace was to last for 30 years.
Lasted just six years.
Athens tried to expand again in 415 BC- Athenian Army and Navy sent to Sicily- but
were defeated.
Sparta attacked Athens and cut off food supply.
Sparta received support from Persia and the former leader of Athens.
Athens surrendered after losing its navy and the wall of the city were torn down.
End of War- Sparta controlled all of Greece for a time after the wars.
City-states were fighting for power.
Greece oblivious to what was happening to the north.
Greece vulnerable for attack- Phillip II of Macedonia invaded Greece.
