FORM SEVEN PHYSICS (P 3.2)
WORKSHEET ONE:
1.
The following measurements were made. For each measurement give its absolute uncertainty.
Assume the readings were taken to the smallest scale division on the instrument.
(a)
2.
4.
Length of desk = 2.22 m
(b) Mass of student = 62 kg
Convert the following absolute uncertainties into percentage uncertainties.
(a)
3.
UNCERTAINTIES IN MEASUREMENTS AND CALCULATIONS

(a)
Express the following numbers in standard form. (i) 950 x 104
(b)
4.7 mA ± 0.5% __________ (c) 600 N ± 2% _________
(iii) 565.04
State the number of significant figures in each of the following. (i) 0.10120 cm
(ii) 6540.001 s
6.
2.3 ± 0.2 s
Convert the following percentage uncertainties into absolute uncertainties.
(ii) 0.0055
5.
(c)
(iii) 0.00055 kg
(iv) 8.01 x 106 N
Calculate the volumes of the following containers to the correct number of significant figures.
(a)
A cylinder of radius 25 mm and length 20 cm.
(b)
A box with the following dimensions. Length = 65 cm, width = 32.51 cm, depth = 9.6 cm.
A school corridor is in three sections. A student measures each section as follows:
Section 1 = 45 m ± 0.5 m. Section 2 = 27.5 m ± 0.2 m. Section 3 = 88 m ± 2 m.
Calculate the length of the corridor stating the uncertainty in your answer.
7.
The force produced by pasing a current through a wire in amagnetic field is given by F = BVL.
B = (1.05 ± 0.02) T
V = (24 ± 1)V
L = (0.063 ± 0.0005)m
Calculate the force produced and state the uncertainty in your answer.
8.
An object is accelerated from rest at (1.5 ± 0.1) ms-2. Calculate its speed after a measured time of
(6 ± 0.5) s. Give the uncertainty in your answer.
9.
In timing an event a student repeated the event six times and got results as follows.
15.3 s 16.4 s 14.9 s 12.8 s 13.5 s 13.9 s
Calculate the average time and state the uncertainty in your answer.
10.
A student counted the number of cars that went through an intersection each traffic sequence.
His results were: 28, 45, 15, 35, 22, 42, 33.
Calculate the average number of cars and express the absolute and percentage uncertainty in your
answer.
11.
The period of a pendulum was measured by allowing it to swing through one cycle.
It was measured as (1.3 ± 0.5)s
(a)
Express this in percentage error form.
(b)
The period was then measured by allowing it to swing ten times and the time for the ten
swings was measured at 15 s. The absolute error in this measurement remained at ± 0.5 s.
Calculate the period and express the error as both a percentage and an absolute value.
