Kelp Forests can be found along the coast, the plant can grow
14 inches a day and can be as long as 130 feet long. Kelp is used
for many things that we eat or use daily like ice cream, tooth
paste, chocolate milk, whipping cream, pudding, and brownie
mix, frozen yogurt and mayonnaise. Its natural value is very
high and it is good for most health food products.
Normally kelp is collected from the sea in summer or autumn. Biological name of kelp
is known as Laminaria, Fucus, Sargassum. It is cleaned and then cut into pieces and
dried in the shade. Kelp provides nutritional support to the nervous system and heart in
the form of iodine, vitamins, minerals and cell salts. Kelp not only absorbs iodine from
seawater, it also sponges up an enormous supply of essential nutrients and delivers them
to the thyroid and the rest of the body. These nutrients include protein, essential fatty
acid, carbohydrates, fiber, trace elements, sodium and potassium salts, and a variety of
other chemicals, such as alginic acid. Since the whole parts of the plant can be used and
as it is rich in Iodine, it is very effective to reduce cholesterol and blood pressure. The
leaves parts are particularly used for medicinal propose which can provide bulk for
bowel movements and iodine can interfere with normal thyroid function.
Cultural studies relating to the result of diet including kelp have determined a link to a
lower breast cancer rate; less obesity, heart disease, rheumatism, arthritis; lower blood
pressure; less thyroid disease; less constipation and gastro-intestinal ailments and less
infectious disease. Kelp provides nutritional support to the nervous system and heart in
the form of iodine, vitamins, minerals and cell salts.
