Chapter 4 – Human Body Systems
1. Cells are the basic building blocks of life. Each cell has a special
job.
2. Cells of the same type work together to form tissues.
3. A group of different kinds of tissues that work together to perform a
special task is an organ.
4. Groups of organs work together to form systems.
5. The respiratory system allows your body to breathe in oxygen and to
breathe out carbon dioxide.
6. The main organs of the respiratory system are the lungs.
7. Air enters your body through your nose and mouth.
8. The trachea, or windpipe, connects your nose to your lungs.
9. Your lungs get bigger as you breathe in air, and they get smaller as
you breathe out air.
10. The air travels through a system of tubes in your lungs that end in
tiny air sacs.
11. Oxygen passes from the air sacs into your bloodstream, which
delivers it to all of the cells in your body.
12. Carbon dioxide is removed from the cells and taken back to your
lungs so it can be removed from your body.
13. The circulatory system is responsible for taking blood, which
contains oxygen and nutrients, to all of the cells in your body.
14. The heart is the muscle that pumps blood throughout your body.
15. Arteries are the blood vessels that take the blood to all of the parts
of your body.
16. Capillaries are the very small blood vessels at the end of the
arteries that allow oxygen to move into your cells and carbon
dioxide to move out of your cells.
17. Veins are the blood vessels that return the blood to your heart.
18. The valves in the heart keep the blood from moving the wrong way.
