POSITION SUMMARY: Performs journey-level work in the maintenance, repair, and construction of college facilities. Independently functions as a fully qualified carpenter in the maintenance, repair and construction of structures, walls, floors, windows, screens, sashes, doors, furniture, fixtures, stairs cupboards, roofs and cabinets. REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: Reports to: Director of Facilities and Capital Projects Employees Supervised: 0 ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES: 1. Repair or alter buildings, sheds, scaffolds, partitions, concrete forms and other structures from plans, sketches or instructions; may construct new facilities from blueprints and specifications. 2. Repair floors, walls, ceilings, screens, windows, sashes, doors, furniture, fixtures, stairs, cupboards, and roofs. 3. Lay flooring and carpeting, and install Formica. 4. Build and install cabinets, furniture, and other fixtures. 5. Install and adjust doors; install and repair locks, weather stripping, brackets for mirrors and draperies, linoleum, tile, gutters, and down spouts. Repair stone and marble walkways and floors; form, pour and finish concrete curbs and driveways. 7. Operate a variety of power tools such as saws, jointers, nail guns, jack hammers, cement mixers, lathes, sanders, planers, and boring and mortising machines; clean, sharpen, maintain, and repair power and hand tools. 8. Prioritize work projects; provides information to use to prepare materials and time estimates for jobs; ensure that all work is done in accordance with college guidelines and trade standards. 9. Drive service truck as required; routinely inspect for safety and maintenance problems; maintains interior and exterior cleanliness; load and unload materials and supplies and transport them to work areas; assist in maintaining inventory of materials and supplies. 10. Provide direction and feedback to part-time and student workers, as needed. OTHER WORK ACTIVITIES: 1. Maintain professional growth and development through seminars, workshops and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise. 2. Ensure no injuries to self or others by following safe work practices and policies. This includes, but is not limited to: security and safety, understanding of MSDS, equipment, infection control, fire, disaster, safe lifting and body mechanics. 3. Ensure compliance with college policies and procedures and state and federal regulations. 4. Conduct self in a professional manner and ensures the interaction with team members and other support groups is conducted in a courteous and efficient manner conducive to the college’s values. 5. Perform related duties and responsibilities as may be required. DUTIES OF THE POSITION REQUIRE EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE IN: 1. Knowledge of standard practices, methods, materials, tools, equipment of carpentry trade, lumber types and grades; safety precautions; basic computer skills. 2. Ability to work from blueprints, plans, and sketches. Estimate materials and time needed to complete jobs. Use hand and power tools, sharpen and set saws. 3. Safe work practices including wearing respirator and other safety equipment; working safely in the presence of employees and others; safely lift objects in excess of 50 pounds. 4. Basic computer skills including ability to utilize email and electronic work order system. DUTIES OF THE POSITION REQURE THE ABILITY TO: 1. Read and interpret instrumentation, view gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure equipment is working properly. GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a carpenter; or full journey status as a carpenter in a union; OR four years’ applicable work experience. Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for year basis. 2. High school diploma or GED. 3. Current and valid Washington State Driver’s License and auto insurance; must be maintained current throughout employment. REQUIRED WORK SCHEDULE AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: Basic work schedule is 7:00am to 3:30pm, Monday through Friday. Hours of work may be adjusted to meet the needs of the department. Knowledge and implementation of safety practices is essential to this position. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. To perform the duties of a Carpenter it is essential to meet the physical demands of performing work on large equipment and also work with very small components in confined spaces. May be exposed to chemicals, fumes and changing temperature conditions. Position involves lifting up to 50 pounds on a regular basis and up to 100 pounds on an occasional basis.
