Week 1 DQ 2 Doug's Story
Read Doug’s story in the Human Ecology Perspective section of your
textbook. Respond to the ethical questions that follow. To what extent is economic
inequality fair? Did Doug have the right to vent his anger in such a violent manner?
What, if anything, could be done to improve Doug’s economic and ecological status?
Guided Response: Review several of your classmates’ posts. Provide a substantive
response to at least two of your peers. Do you agree or disagree with their stance on
the fairness of economic inequality? Why or why not? What other suggestions would
you make to improve Doug’s economic and ecological status that your peers did not
mention?

The overall quality of life of an individual as explained in the way they manage and
communicate with everyone around them and the environment is called human ecology
(Zastrow, 2010). In this perspective, individual behavior is seen as something that is
influenced by the people around them, by what they see and live with. With this being said,
likeness and being agreeable is always part of the deal yet there are some that are on top all
the time hence they are richer, more powerful and better in everything. This is called
survival of the fittest hence the poor tries hard to live on a day to day basis and get through
with life. This is called economic inequality. This is like the United States taking advantage
of other nations to get their riches and natural resources by showing that they care when in
fact they don't.
The economic inequality we are talking here is what Doug have experienced in his life
because he feels like he was left behind without being given the chance to race. He feel
sorry for himself that he got nothing while others have everything. This caused him to look
for someone to listen to him, to feel what he is feeling and tries to understand what he is
going through. My question though is, where is the sense of self-responsibility in Doug's
life? Does he had any sense of being responsible for his well-being? Does his sisters and
brothers feel the same or maybe Doug must learn to have a sense of responsiblity for
himself first. I guess it is not his neighbor's responsibility to help him get a decent job. It
was not his brother or sister's responsiblity to ask him to finish his studies or do something
to get a job. To be honest, there are a lot of jobs out there that is waiting to be taken and
worked on. There are a lot of government programs out there that offers help and
assistance and I guess what Doug needs to do is to look for them and get a job himself. If
everyone will just blame their condition to whatever was given to them, then I guess we
cannot do anything about it.
