4th Grade Spelling Activities Monday Activity Choices (#1-10) 1. Write your spelling words in alphabetical order from A – Z one time and Z – A another time. 2. Write your spelling words three times in crayon or colored pencil. Write each consonant letter in red and each vowel in blue. 3. Print each word. Next to it, write each word in cursive. 4. Make a set of flash cards for studying your words. 5. Write each spelling word three times. 6. Write each spelling word in a rainbow of colors. First write the word in red, then trace over it in blue, then in green. 7. Write your spelling words as fractions based on the number of vowels and consonants in each word. WORD finger small VOWELS 2/6 1/5 CONSONANTS 4/6 4/5 8. Print and scramble the letters of each spelling word, then ask a sibling or parent to unscramble them. Correct that person’s written work! 9. Write each spelling word. Then write two additional words of at least 3 letters each that can be spelled using the letters in the word. Ex.: lick, pick, pike could be made from the letters in the word pickle. 10. Write your spelling words in secret using the Secret Key Code. Ex: “CLUE” = 3 – 12 – 21 - 5 A =1 B=2 C=3 D=4 E=5 F=6 G=7 H=8 I=9 J = 10 K = 11 L = 12 M = 13 N = 14 0 = 15 P = 16 Q = 17 R = 18 S = 19 T = 20 U = 21 V = 22 W = 23 X = 24 Y = 25 Z = 26 Tuesday Activity Choices (#11-19) 11. Spelling Math; Use the Secret Key Code to determine the value of each spelling word. Ex: CLUE = 3 + 12 + 21 + 5 = 41 12. Write 10, Seven-Up sentences (each sentence has 7 or more words) using a different spelling word in each sentence. Underline the spelling word you used. 13. Write your spelling words on cards (make two sets) and play Memory Match with them against a parent or sibling. (Parent signs homework notebook). 14. Use a thesaurus to write a synonym for 12 of your words. 15. Write a mnemonic sentence to help you remember the spelling of your 5 hardest words. For example, a mnemonic sentence for the word papaya might be: Paul ate plums and yellow apples. 16. Make and complete a word search on puzzlemaker.com 17. Write a letter to a friend/relative, in proper letter format, using 10 of your spelling words. UNDERLINE EACH SPELLING WORD. 18. Use at least 15 of your spelling words to write a short story that is in proper paragraph format. The story must make sense! 19. Use a dictionary to write definitions of 10 of your words. Thursday Activity 20. Spelling Practice test given by parent or sibling. Parent signs pretest. Write missed words three times each. *ALL ACTIVITIES ARE DUE THE NEXT DAY!
