Skill Set A: Students will be able to use the Pythagorean Theorem and its converse to find the missing side of a right triangle or determine if the given sides of a triangle form a right, acute or obtuse triangle. Skill Set B: Students will be able to use the patterns for 30-60-90 and 45-45-90 right triangles to find the missing side of special right triangle. Skill Set C: Students will be able to use trigonometry to find the missing sides and/or angles of right triangles. Skill Set D: Students will be able to apply angles of elevation and depression to real-world scenarios. Unit 6: Right Triangles ENDURING UNDERSTANDINGS: The properties of right triangles are used to solve real world situations. 1. Certain right triangles have properties that allow short cuts to determine side lengths. 2. If certain combinations of side lengths and angle measures of a right triangle are known, then ratios may be used to find other side lengths and angle measures. ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS: How are right triangles used to solve real world problems? 1. How are the sides of right triangles related? 2. Under what conditions are trigonometric ratios used? 3. How are angles of elevation and depression used to find horizontal distance and vertical height? SOL Objectives (2009): G.8 The student will solve real-world problems involving right triangles by using the Pythagorean Theorem and its converse, properties of special right triangles, and right triangle trigonometry. Virginia Beach Objectives: GP2.TR.6.1 The student will use the Pythagorean Theorem and its converse to solve problems and recognize Pythagorean triples. (SOL G.8) GP2.TR.6.2 The student will apply properties of special right triangles to real world problems and find decimal approximations for the solutions. (SOL G.8) GP2.TR.6.3 The student will solve real world problems using sine, cosine, and tangent functions of acute angles in right triangles. (SOL G.8) UNIT 6: Right Traingles PRIOR KNOWLEDGE & PRE-REQUISITE SKILLS (based on VA SOLS previously taught) 1. 2. The student will measure right, acute, obtuse, and straight angles. (SOL5.11) The student will classify a) angles as right, acute, obtuse, or straight; and b) triangles as right, acute, obtuse, equilateral, scalene, or isosceles. (SOL 5.12) 3. The student will determine square roots. (SOL 7.1d) 4. The student will evaluate algebraic expressions for given replacement values of the variables. (SOL 7.13b) 5. The student will a) solve one- and two- step linear equations in one variable; and b) solve practical problems requiring the solution of one- and two- step linear equations. (SOL 7.14) 6. The student will a) solve practical problems involving rational numbers. (SOL 8.3a) 7.
