English Paper 1: Situational Writing
To: Miss Tan,
Principal, Hogwarts Secondary School
From: Chris Evans, Class 3E4
Suggestion of post-exam activities
Dear Miss Tan,
As a part of the Student Welfare Committee in school, I have been
asked to propose ideas for post-exam activities. After looking through the possible
suggestions, I would like to put forward the three activities that are the most meaningful
and educational, yet at the same time fun.
The students in our school do enjoy public-speaking as you may know from the
success of the Speakers’ Corner in school. I would like to suggest a speech and drama
course as it is interactive and enriching. The GCE O’levels English Oral examination is
coming up and thus this is a good opportunity for the students to polish up their oral skills.
In addition, engaging in drama-related activities will be a fun-filled experience for our
students as you may know from the large number of students in the Drama Club. As
holding this course requires the help of external coaches, the prices may be a bit
expensive. However, this can be easily managed by deducting an amount of money from
the students’ Edusave accounts. The remainder could be used from the funds that we
have collected during our Flag Day for our school. The lack of space might be a problem
but if we break up the students into various groups and send different groups to different
venues, that problem can be solved too. The briefing and debriefing sessions can be held
in our school hall which is large enough for assemblies. Thus, I believe that the speech
and drama course will be a really enriching and fun-filled activity for the students.
Visiting a children’s home is another activity that I would like to put forward.
This will provide comfort for some of the lonely children at the children’s home as they
will have people to play with. In addition, this activity will be meaningful as it teaches
the students to be compassionate. This activity will also reinforce the importance of
family and love. The activities for entertaining the children can make use of our students’
skills and talents. Thus, it will give our students a platform to showcase their abilities.
Thus, the students will be entertaining one another. On the other hand, not all students
will be comfortable in the role of being a buddy to someone from the children’s home.
However, by some interaction, I believe that these students will learn how to adapt
quickly to them. In addition, before visiting the home, the students will be briefed on the
correct attitude and etiquette. The students who may feel uncomfortable will also be
paired with some of us so that in the event that they hate the experience, we can make it
fun for them. Therefore, visiting a children’s home is a really meaningful activity that is
highly educational.
In addition, an obstacle course is another good idea for our students to have a lot
of fun. It is healthy and it teaches the students the importance of staying fir. Moreover,
the student athletes and the students in the sports-related Co-Curricular Activities will
really enjoy this experience. It will also give the students a chance to let their hair down.
Even though this may be a challenge to organize, we have done something similar when
we held the Amazing Race last year. As you will know, the students really enjoyed that
experience. The problem with logistics that we may face can also be easily solved by our
AVA club and some of our technologically-savvy students. Thus, the obstacle course will
offer a wonderful chance for the students to have an enriching and yet fun-filled
experience.
Therefore, I believe that the three activities that would best meet the objectives of
being meaningful, educational and entertaining are the visit to children’s home, speech
and drama course and the obstacle course. The students will have a really enjoyable time
engaging in these activities. I hope that you consider my proposal favourably. Thank you.
