ACCE 11th grade Biology Ms. Montgomery DATE: UNIT: TEXT(S): 1.6.2012 Biochemistry: Macromolecules OBJECTIVE (What will my students know and be able to do by the time they leave my class today?): Students will: · investigate the structure of macromolecules by Macromolecule Build KEY POINTS (What 1-2 major themes do I want my students to take away from today’s class?): · · The four major macronutrients needed for survival are carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. All of the macromolecules are constructed from smaller, simpler parts. All but lipids are considered polymers. STANDARD: ASSESSMENT (How will I determine whether or not my student’s have achieved the objective?): 3.1.1 - VOCABULARY MATERIALS (What materials will teacher and student need to complete today’s lesson?): · · · · · · · · · · · · Macromolecule Build handout · print-outs · scissors · glue/tape · amino acid structure chart Carbohydrate Lipid Protein Nucleic Acid Monosaccharide Glycerol Amino Acid Nucleotide Fatty Acid Polymer Monomer Do now/exit ticket Lab handout AGENDA (What will Homework happen during today’s class and how long will it take?): Test Tomorrow · Do Now (5min) · Lab Overview (10min) · Macromolecule Build (50min) · Cleanup (5min) ENGAGE (What will engage my students in the theme of the lesson from the outset of class?): Students will fill in their weekly Do Now/Exit Ticket worksheet · Students will copy the objective · Students will answer the Do Now question (based off of 5.1 Short Answer HW) · Students will receive a stamp within the first 5 minutes of class for having the 2 above completed EXPLANATION Teacher will introduce the background for the Macromolecule Build - making sure to use the vocabulary for the unit (macromolecule, carbohydrate, lipid, protein, nucleic acid) and showing examples. Teacher will explain the purpose of the experiment as well. EXPLORATION Students will complete the Macromolecule Build to review macromolecule structure and refresh on the structure of monomers before unit exam. EXTENSION EVALUATE and CLOSING (How will I tie up loose ends, reinforce the big ideas/objective and connect the lesson to the unit/big picture?): Exit Ticket: Students will answer exit ticket question on weekly organizer as a wrap up of Macromolecule Build. Accommodations: · Extended time · Preferential seating · Reduced distractions · Printed powerpoints · Guided notes · Hands on activities
