ASSOCIATE DEGREE NURSING PROGRAM
MANAGEMENT MISSION QUEST
YOUR CLINICAL FACILITY
The clinical instructor will assign the following topics. Each student will complete the
assignment and present in post-conference the week they are the team leader.
1. Discuss the facility’s mission, vision, goals, and organizational chart. Discuss
what public relations activities Does the facility offer to the community? Discuss
with public relations department.
2. Discuss how a unit charges for patient care (how much does the room cost or
private insurance, Medicare, private pay), patient supplies (specify cost of three
item on the unit), and medications (specify one oral medication, IVPB, and a
controlled substance). How does the facility address lost charges or when patients
can’t pay for their hospital care?
3. Discuss how patient complaints are dealt with at this facility. Must discuss with
Patient Care Advocate or department that addresses any patient complaints inhospital, emergency room, or clinics. Discuss how nursing complaints with other
departments (i.e. dietary, respiratory, pharmacy etc) are processed. Discuss how
nursing complaints with physicians are handled at this facility.
4. The Joint Commission is planning a visit. What does this mean, what planning
must take place, what preparation must take place, and why must the hospital
need this accreditation? Must discuss this with an individual in your facility.
Obtain a copy of the National Patient Safety Goals to discuss in post-conference.
5. Occupational Health & Safety Administration (OSHA) is planning a visit. What
does this mean, what planning must take place, what preparation must take place,
and why must the hospital need this accreditation? Must discuss this with
Infection Control Nurse and Safety Officer.
6. Medicare/Medicaid is planning a visit. What does this mean, what planning must
take place, what preparation must take place, and why must the hospital need this
accreditation? Must discuss this with Discharge Planner.
7. Discuss what happens if a nurse is accused of any of the following: 1) suspected
of stealing narcotics; 2) working under the influence of alcohol/drugs; 3) violation
of medication administration/documentation. Discuss Peer Review and determine
how this facility initiates Peer Review. What must the nurse do if going before a
Peer Review and how will it affect nurse’s career?
8. The nurse has an ethical dilemma. Discuss the facility’s Ethics Committee. Who
is on this committee? How does the nurse access the Ethics Committee?
9. Obtain a job description for a beginning RN and an Unlicensed Authorized
Personnel (UAP) at clinical facility. Identify the difference between a full time,
part time and PRN nurse. Talk to a human resource individual and discuss the
criteria for being hired and fired from this facility.
10. Discuss how “scheduling” is done on two different units. You must discuss with
two managers – how they determine nurse/patient ratio, work assignments for
each level of staff, and any additional duties. When do the schedules come out
and does the staff have any input or how do staff request specific days off? What
about holidays?
11. Discuss budget issues on a specific unit specifically addressing the numbers of
registered nurses, licensed vocational nurses, patient care technicians, and unit
secretaries and the nurse/patient ratio on each shift and agency-nursing usage.
You must obtain information from administration and/or management.
12. Identify and discuss the purpose/goals of at least 5 committees that include
nursing staff. Interview one of the nurses that serves on one of the 5 committees
including discussing what occurred in the latest meeting.
ALL STUDENTS: Must identify, research, and determine how the facility implements a
National Safety Goal. The student will present in post-conference the week team leading.
The student cannot present the same example of a safety standard previously presented.
SECOND WEEK WHEN TEAM LEADER
Each student team leading for a second time will look up a policy that impacts the
delivery of care at the facility and research the policy on the internet for evidenced based
practice to support the policy or to determine if a change might be suggested. The student
will present the policy in post conference during the team leading week.
OR
The student may arrange with the manager to attend a committee meeting. The student
must research one project currently being performed at the facility for evidence based
support. The student will then report on the committee's purpose, goals, and projects in
post conference.
