Sexually Transmitted Diseases – Day 8
Objective:
Students will be able to identify the cause, symptoms, mode of transmission, treatments/cures, and prevention for the top ten sexually transmitted
diseases.
Question: Which do you think is worse, a sexually transmitted disease caused by a bacterium, a parasite, or a virus?
Explain your choice.
Student answers will vary but should draw upon their basic understanding of bacteria, viruses, & parasites.
What matters most is that the students defend their choice with logic and reason.
Inform Yourself! Using the resources provided by your teacher, complete the following data table.

Compare and contrast a bacterial versus a viral STD in terms of treatment and prevention. Use the Venn diagram below to record your analysis. Write all points
regarding treatment in BLACK INK and all points regarding prevention in BLUE INK.
BACTERIAL STD
TREATMENT: Most bacterial STDs can be
cured by ANTIBIOTICS.
VIRAL STD
PREVENTION:
abstinence and/or
effective condom use
TREATMENT: NO CURE!!! But some viral
infections can “treated” with antiviral
medication to help prevent outbreak and
transmission.
