Appointments
Violet Lane operates an appointments only system for the Doctors. This system aims to provide
continuity and the best possible level of care. Patients will be offered an appointment with their
registering GP or with one of the salaried GPs.
To make an appointment please phone 020 8688 0333 between 08:00 and 18:00 Monday to
Friday.
Our Nurse Specialist Practitioner runs a Minor Illness clinic every day for patients needing
urgent appointments to be seen on that day. Patients can also book appointments with her for
Asthma, Diabetes, Heart Disease and Family Planning.
Appointments are important and take time. If, for any reason, you cannot keep your appointment,
PLEASE let us know at the surgery, so that appointments can be offered to someone else. Thank
you.
Home Visits
If possible please try to telephone reception before 10:00 if you require a home visit.
A doctor or nurse may phone you back as it may be that your problem can be dealt with by
telephone advice, or that it would be more appropriate to send a nurse, or indeed arrange a
hospital attendance.
House visits are only available for patients who are housebound because of illness or disability.
Please remember that several patients can be seen in the practice in the time that it takes to make
one home visit. There are also better facilities for examining and treating patients at the surgery.
Repeat Prescriptions
Repeat prescriptions are for medicines already agreed with the Doctors. If you have not had a
medication from us before, you must see the Doctor to discuss your requirements. There are
several ways to obtain your prescription
At Reception
By filling in a repeat prescription slip or by ticking the items you require on your repeat
prescription counterfoil. You will need to allow two full working days to process the prescription
request before collection. Current / Acute prescriptions (i.e. an item only issued once before)
may take longer and you may be asked to make an appointment your Doctor.
Please ensure all details including the full name, date of birth and phone number are clearly
marked on the prescription request.
By Post
If you would like the completed prescription posted back to you, please enclose a stamped
addressed envelope with your request.
Prescriptions Charges and Exemptions
Extensive exemption and remission arrangements protect those likely to have difficulty in paying
charges (NHS prescription and dental charges, optical and hospital travel costs).
The NHS prescription charge is a flat-rate amount which successive Governments have thought
it reasonable to charge for those who can afford to pay for their medicines. Prescription
prepayment certificates (PPCs) offer real savings for people who need extensive medication.
NHS charges
These charges apply in England only. In Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales
prescriptions are free of charge.



Prescription (per item): £7.65
12-month prepayment certificate (PPC): £104.00
3-month PPC: £29.10
If you will have to pay for four or more prescription items in three months, or more than 14 items
in 12 months, you may find it cheaper to buy a PPC.



There is further information about prescription exemptions and fees on the NHS website
(www.nhs.uk/NHSEngland/Healthcosts/Pages/Prescriptioncosts.aspx)
Please allow 48 hours, excluding weekends and Bank Holidays, for your request to be processed.
Any problems please telephone the surgery.

you have an infection, the Croydon service is the Genitourinary Medicine (GU Medicine) Clinic

also available directly from the local pharmacies if the surgery is closed. Information about
emergency contraception is available on the website of the Family Planning Association
(www.fpa.org.uk/) .
Antenatal and postnatal care
Antenatal and postnatal care is provided by the doctors and our attached midwives according to
local and national policy. The Practice does not provide a home delivery service but you can
discuss this with the midwife. The current schedule of recommended routine antenatal visits is
shown on our pregnancy planner page. This may vary if the hospital or GP feel it necessary.
The midwife
Once you find out that you are pregnant, the first person you will be likely to meet, is your
doctor who will refer you to a qualified community midwife.
Your midwife has done between 3 - 5 years of training in order to qualify, and has a wealth of
experience in dealing with normal healthy women in pregnancy and childbirth. She is the person
with whom you should consult, and should she feel that you need the intervention of a doctor,
she will refer you to him for advice.
She is responsible for providing all your antenatal care needs, assessing you when you go into
labour, delivering your baby and caring for you afterwards. She will also provide you with the
education that you may need, to help you through the birth and afterwards. Unless problems
develop, there should be no need for you to receive care from a doctor, as birth is a natural
occurrence, and for most women, will progress normally to a normal delivery.
Cervical Smears
Cervical cytology tests (smear tests) are recommended for all women between the ages of 25
and 64. The Practices follow this national screening programme.
Croydon Primary Care Trust and the Practices recall women for these tests on a 5 yearly
programme.
Appointments for this smear test should be made with our skilled Practice Nurses or booked at
the NHS Walk In Centre.

schedule
Please contact the Practice nurses when your child's immunisations are due. We will send you a
reminder if we do not hear from you.
Health Visitors
Health Visitors employed by Croydon Community Health Services are attached to each of the
SCMP Practices.
Health Visitors lead a team of people who may be involved in the care of your children. These
include community health nurses, registered nurses and nursery nurses.
They will normally visit you when your baby is born, and then follow your child until they go to
school.
Health Visitors have links with specialists in the health service and other agencies. They can
refer your child for tests if, for example, there are concerns about hearing, sight, etc. In these
situations, they can act as an advocate for your child.
They also work closely with Social Services and the Police if there are concerns about child
abuse. They also work with children with special needs and those who are born with a disability

Blood Tests
Blood Tests
A blood test is when a sample of blood is taken for testing in a laboratory. Blood tests have a
wide range of uses and are one of the most common types of medical test. For example, a blood
test can be used to:



assess your general state of health
confirm the presence of a bacterial or viral infection
see how well certain organs, such as the liver and kidneys, are functioning
A blood test usually involves the phlebotomist taking a blood sample from a blood vessel in your
arm. and the usual place for a sample is the inside of the elbow or wrist, where the veins are
relatively close to the surface. Blood samples from children are most commonly taken from the
back of the hand. The child's hand will be anaesthetised (numbed) with a special cream before
the sample is taken. Children's blood test are usually taken at the hospital. Appointment for adult
blood test can be taken on a Tuesday and Thursday morning at the surgery.
You can find out more about blood tests, their purpose and the way they are performed on the
NHS Choices website.
X-Ray
X-Ray
An X-ray is a widely used diagnostic test to examine the inside of the body. X-rays are a very
effective way of detecting problems with bones, such as fractures. They can also often identify
problems with soft tissue, such as pneumonia or breast cancer.
If you have a X-ray, you will be asked to lie on a table or stand against a surface so that the part
of your body being X-rayed is between the X-ray tube and the photographic plate.
An X-ray is usually carried out by a radiographer, a healthcare professional who specialises in
using imaging technology, such as X-rays and ultrasound scanners.
You can find out more about x-ray tests, how they are performed, their function and the risks by
visiting the NHS Choices website.
