Evangelical Christian Academy Instructional Guide: Course Outline Department: Science Course Title: Anatomy & Physiology Course Length: 2 semesters Essential Questions: Unit #6: Muscular system Chapter 7 Unit Length: 1 ½ weeks What are the distinguishing functional characteristics of muscles? How does the muscle structure permit movement and integrate with the nervous system? Instructional Objectives: Identify the major connective tissue elements related to skeletal muscle. Discuss the attachment of muscles. Explain the functional classification of muscles based on movement pattern. Identify six features that may be used to name a muscle. Identify major muscles, their points of attachment, and their function in the following areas: o Muscles of the head and face o Muscles that move the abdominal and chest wall o Muscles of the pelvic floor o Muscles acting on the shoulder girdle o Muscles that move the upper and lower arm o Muscles that move the wrist, hand, and fingers o Muscles that move the thigh and lower leg o Muscles that move the ankle and foot Define posture and discuss its importance to the body as a whole. Explain the Sliding Filament Model identifying the different proteins and their interaction Discuss Neuromuscular junctions Discuss the basic Structure (gross and microscopic) of muscles Discuss the Physiology of muscle contraction Discuss the different Fiber types and the role of ATP Instructional Resources: ActivBoard Bible Workbook Essential Study Partner Microscope slides of muscles, microscopes Biblical Integration: For in him we move and have our being Anatomy and Physiology Unit #6 Muscular System Revised 6/19/2017 kl Page 1 of 2 Assessments: Class participation/discussion (grammar, logic, and introductory rhetoric) Quizzes Journal entries (grammar, logic, introductory rhetoric) Homework (review to develop understanding and mastery) Evaluation of lab observation and evaluation of skills used Test Student Activities: Memorize muscles of body (Grammar) Optional lab--Dissection of chicken wing to analyze muscle, ligament, tendons, and joints—Use http://www.eduplace.com/science/hmxs/ls/pdf/5rs_1_7-3.pdf making the model arm to explain what is happening Microscope drawings of muscles (Grammar) Optional activity--Create an activity or skit that explains the sliding filament theory (Synthesis) Possible Field trip to physical therapy place Finish research on science fair Anatomy and Physiology Unit #6 Muscular System Revised 6/19/2017 kl Page 2 of 2
