Unit Length: 1 ½ weeks
What are the distinguishing functional characteristics of muscles?
How does the muscle structure permit movement and integrate with the nervous system?
Instructional Objectives:











Identify the major connective tissue elements related to skeletal muscle.
Discuss the attachment of muscles.
Explain the functional classification of muscles based on movement pattern.
Identify six features that may be used to name a muscle.
Identify major muscles, their points of attachment, and their function in the following
areas:
o Muscles of the head and face
o Muscles that move the abdominal and chest wall
o Muscles of the pelvic floor
o Muscles acting on the shoulder girdle
o Muscles that move the upper and lower arm
o Muscles that move the wrist, hand, and fingers
o Muscles that move the thigh and lower leg
o Muscles that move the ankle and foot
Define posture and discuss its importance to the body as a whole.
Explain the Sliding Filament Model identifying the different proteins and their
interaction
Discuss Neuromuscular junctions
Discuss the basic Structure (gross and microscopic) of muscles
Discuss the Physiology of muscle contraction
Discuss the different Fiber types and the role of ATP
