Circulatory System
Heart, Blood Vessels, Blood, Veins, Arteries
What does the circulatory system do?
• Moves blood all through the body
• Blood carries oxygen, CO2 and nutrients in
the body though tubes called blood vessels.
• The heart is the organ that pumps the blood
through the body.
How does the heart work?
• The heart beats constantly
without rest
• Each time the heart beats it
pushes blood through the
vessels of the body
Atriums & Ventricles:
• An atrium is a chamber of the
heart that receives blood from
the body.
• A ventricle is one of the two
large muscular chambers that
pump blood out of the heart.
Pumping blood through the body
• Blood carrying CO2 returns from the body and enters
the right atrium of the heart.
• The blood in the right atrium is pushed through the
atrioventricular valve into the right ventricle.
• The right ventricle squeezes blood out of the heart and
pushes it toward the lungs where the CO2 leaves the
blood and oxygen enters the blood.
• Oxygen-rich blood comes back to the heart at the left
atrium.
• The blood in the left atrium is pushed through an A-V
valve into the left ventricle.
• Then the blood is pushed out to all parts of the body.
Difference between arteries, veins & capillaries
Arteries: blood vessels that carry blood away
from the heart to all parts of the body.
Veins: blood vessels that carry blood from all
parts of the body back to the heart.
Capillaries are tiny blood vessels that
connect arteries to veins. The walls of
capillaries are very thin which allows
nutrients and wastes to pass into and out of
the blood.
What is blood made of?
About 55 % of blood is plasma. Plasma is clear liquid
that is about 92% water. Plasma also has nutrients,
salts, proteins and other chemicals.
Three types of blood cells make up
the rest of the blood: Red blood cells,
White blood cells and Platelets.
Red blood cells – full of hemoglobin
and carry oxygen to the body and
return CO2 to the lungs.
White blood cells – protect the body
from disease.
Platelets – cell fragments that cause
blood to clot, which stops blood loss.
