Babushka owns s tiny plot of land. She has one pig and
some chickens. Her husband was killed during the Great
War leaving her to raise her eight children. Babushka
works her small area of land herself. As she has no
animals, her eldest two children pull the yoke of the
plough whilst she steers the blade. She sows her seeds by
hand. Three of her children died of starvation last
winter. Her eldest daughter, Nikita went to Petrograd to
work in a factory and they have lost touch as the postal
and communications systems have collapsed. Babushka
remains very poor and has to work the land for 14 hours
each day to make ends meet. She cannot read or write.

Lukyan is a village blacksmith. He owns three large
plots of land, a meadow and a pond in the village as well
as the village smithy. As Lukyan spends most of his time
in the smithy he employs three men to farm his land. He
grows wheat and grazes animals on grassland meadow
he also owns. He makes horseshoes and tools for other
villagers which he barters for milk, eggs, vegetables and
vodka. He believes in the old ways of farming and was
once a proud soldier in the Tsar’s army. He had three
sons, Serge, Alexi and Gregori. Sergei was killed during
the Great War ;Alexi died fighting for the Red Army in
1918 and he is unsure of the whereabouts of his youngest
son Gregori, although he think he may be fighting in the
Civil War.

spinning yarn to make clothes which he sells at the local
market along with vegetables from the farm. He buys
food with his profits. He owns ten cows, many ducks and
chickens and three horses. He sells eggs milk and butter
to the poor of the village. Private selling of goods was
outlawed by the Bolsheviks under their policy of war
Communism but Sergei carries on selling. His house is a
hut made from brick and mud. Others in the village
respect him and think he is a very knowledgeable farmer.

Nikita works in the Putilov Armaments factory in
Petrograd. She has worked there for 7 years having
moved from her family home in the village. Nikita is
highly regarded by the factory managers. She was happy
when the Tsar was overthrown and not unhappy when
Kerensky and the Provisional Government were
overthrown by Lenin and the Bolsheviks as she believed
Lenin’s’ slogans of ‘Peace Bread and land’ and ‘All power
to the Soviets.’ She joined the Factory school and has
learned to read and write. However since 1918 she is
becoming more disillusioned because of food shortages,
long working hours and harsh working conditions

Gregori had been called up in 1914 to fight for the Tsars
army against the Germans. In 1918 he found himself
taken into the Bolshevik Red Army to fight the White
armies who wished to overthrow Bolshevism. Gregori
has been part of the Red Army squads going into village
to requisition grain from the peasants. Along with his
fellow Red Army soldiers, Gregori is well fed and
commands respect. He goes to Political classes, run by
Lev, the Bolshevik Political Commissar, to learn about
the revolution and to learn how to read and write. He
thinks of Lenin and Trotsky as great heroes and would
do anything for the revolution.

Andrei has been a sailor with the Kronstadt Battalion
for 8 years. He fought for the Bolsheviks in 1917 and
along with his fellow Kronstadt sailors was key in the
Bolsheviks winning power. Since then the Kronstadt
sailors have been vital in the Bolsheviks winning the
Russian Civil War against their enemies the White
Army. However, over the past few months Andrei and
his fellow Kronstadt sailors have become disillusioned
with the Revolution and with the Bolsheviks. The
suffering of the peasants, the famine the long-working
hours and poor working conditions have created a
situation no better than when the Tsar or the
provisional Government were in power.

Lev is a fanatical Bolshevik and supporter of Lenin. He
was in Petrograd in April 1917 when Lenin returned and
issued the April Theses. During the summer of 1917 Lev
worked tirelessly to bring about the Bolshevik
revolution. He now works as a Political Commissar for
the party making sure party orders are followed. He
believes that the needs of the Bolshevik revolution are
most important and that any suffering caused by the
revolution will be short-term and is necessary for the
Bolshevik revolution to succeed in Russia.

Each group will be chaired by the local priest, who will be impartial and take notes.
The priest will record what points each character is making, what the feeling of the meeting is and will
report back at the end on behalf of the group before a vote is taken.
