You can compete several different ways in DECA from testing to written projects. All competitive events
involve communication skills whereby you conduct a role-play. In a role-play you will speak in front of an
adult in the business community who listens to your marketing presentation and they will ask you a few
questions at the end.
DECA’S 12 COMPETITIVE EVENT CATEGORIES
(This is an individual Event category involving testing and conducting a role-play activity.)

MANAGEMENT TEAM DECISION MAKING EVENTS
(Teams of two students who each take a Test and conduct a Role-Play scenario)

MARKETING RESEARCH EVENTS
(Teams of 1-2 students and involves a written document and an oral presentation. Limited to 30 numbered
pages.) Each year a new topic is covered to research for your chosen business. Your team will actually
conduct a marketing research activity for a chosen company.

CHAPTER TEAM EVENTS
(Teams of 2-3 students)
1. Civic Consciousness Project (CCP)- provides an opportunity for DECA members to develop a
better understanding of the role civic activities have in society, to make a contribution to a
community service or charity, and to apply these principles to marketing management. Limited to
30- numbered pages and an oral presentation.
2.
Creative Marketing Project CMP)- Involves the research study in the marketing field, planned,
conducted and reported by a DECA chapter, the use of which will measurably improve the
marketing activities of an individual company, a group of companies (such as a shopping mall) or
the business community. Limited to 30-numbered pages and an oral presentation.
3.
Entrepreneurship Promotion Project (EPP)- Provides an opportunity for participants to
demonstrate the skills needed in planning, organizing, implementing and evaluating a campaign to
educate chapter members and the general public or an organized group about the opportunities
available for becoming an entrepreneur. Suggested target audiences are educational groups,
business groups, etc. Limited to 30-numbered pages and an oral presentation.

Learn & Earn Project (LEP)- Participants will plan, organize and conduct a sales/service project
in their local community or school and evaluate the project’s planning, organization and
implementation in the report. Limited to 30-numbered pages and an oral presentation. (exampleSelect one of our fund raisers and write about it- Entertainment Book Sale or Candy Sale)

Public Relations Project (PRP)- Participants will develop and/or identify a theme for a public
relations campaign; next to plan a public relations campaign in their local community and
implement it at school and involve the local community. Finally, you evaluate the planning and
implementation process. Limited to 30-numbered pages and an oral presentation.
MARKETING REPRESENTATIVE EVENTS
(These are individual written projects limited to 10-numbered pages)
1. Advertising Campaign Event (ADC)- Participant will prepare an advertising campaign for any length
for a real product, service, or business and to present the campaign to a prospective client/advertiser.
2. Fashion Merchandising Promotion Plan (FMP)- Participant will develop a seasonal sales promotion
plan, using apparel and accessory items only, for a retail store and present the plan in a role-playing
situation to the store manager.
3. Technical Sales Event (TSE)- Participant will demonstrate knowledge of the National curriculum
frameworks (DECA’s General Marketing Test) as well as the ability to organize and deliver a sales
presentation for one or more technical products and/or services. This event consists of two parts: written
comprehensive exam and the oral presentation.
Entrepreneurship Event
E-Commerce Business Plan- (EBP)- (Team of 1-2 DECA members)
Participants will research and design a plan to start an e-commerce business or enhance a component of an
existing e-commerce business. E-commerce definition: The buying and selling of products and services by
businesses and consumers over the Internet.
Entrepreneurship Written (ENW)- Team of 1-2 DECA members)
Participants will design and conduct a marketing research study to identify the potential for
entrepreneurship. Next, prepare a written proposal for a new business and request financing for the
proposal in a role-playing interview. Limited to 30- numbered pages.
International Business Plan (IBP)- (Team of 1-2 DECA members)
Participants will apply marketing skills in an international setting and prepare a written proposal for a new
business venture ( a new business or a new product or service of an existing business.) Limited to 30numbered pages.
Entrepreneurship Participating- Independent or Franchise Business(ENPI)
(Individual project) Participant will develop an present a proposal to form a business. Includes the
analysis of a business opportunity, a marketing/promotion plan and a financial plan. Limited to 10numbered pages.
