Bear
Bears have thick fur. Bears have a tiny tail.
Bears have big claws to help catch food.
Some bears live in hot places. Some bears live
in very cold places.
Bears eat meat as well as plants and fish.
Bears can run fast, climb trees and swim.
 Bears are heavy sleepers in the winter.
 Baby bears are called cubs.
 Bears have great sense of smell, sight and
hearing.
Turtles and tortoises
Turtles and tortoises are reptiles. They have
shells. Turtles and tortoises have four legs. Most
turtles can pull their legs, tail, and head into the
shell for protection. Turtles have a tail. It tucks
away into the shell.
Some turtles live in the sea, some live in fresh
water. Those kinds that live on the land are
called tortoises.
Most turtles eat plants and meat.
Turtles can’t breathe in water, but they can hold
their breath. Turtles move slowly but they are
fast swimmers.
 Turtles have been on earth for about 200
million years, since before the dinosaurs.
 Adult sea turtles can weigh from 75 – 500
kilos!
Snake
Snakes are reptiles that do not have legs. They
slither on the ground to move. There are many
kinds of snakes in the world.
Snakes are covered with scaly skin. They have
no arms or legs.
They live on the ground, in water, in trees, under
the ground. Most baby snakes hatch out of
eggs.
Snakes eat animals and birds.
Snakes smell and taste with their tongues.
Some people keep snakes as pets.
 The largest and heaviest snake is the anaconda,
found in Brazil.
 Anacondas can grow to 10 meters and weigh 250
kilograms.
Zebra
Zebras live in Africa.
Zebras are part of the horse family. They look a
bit like small horses. They have black and white
stripes. Their patterns are all different.
Zebras eat grass.
Zebras have strong bodies and legs, small
hooves, big ears and manes that are striped.
Zebras can run really fast.
 No two zebras have the same pattern.
 Zebra family names are stallion, mare and foal. A
baby zebra is called a foal.
Iguana
Iguanas are big lizards. There are many different
kinds of iguana.
Iguanas have spikes along their backs. They
have long tails.
Most kinds of iguana live in trees. They eat
leaves and buds.
One kind of iguana swims in the sea.
Iguanas lay eggs in a hole in soft ground.
 Some iguanas can live for 30 years.
 People keep iguanas as pets.
 They can fall up to 1,5 meters without being injured,
and can run.
Giraffe
Giraffes are the tallest animals of all. They live in

shops and from vets. They drink milk when they
are kittens and then water. Sometimes cats eat
grass.
Cats can run up to 20 kilometers per hour.
 Male cats are called toms, and females are called
queens. Their young are called kittens.
 Cats purr and are friendly and playful pets.
Emu
Emus live all over Australia.
Emus are birds but they can't fly.
They can be up to 2 meters tall and have long
strong legs for running. They can run very fast
(50 km per hour).
Emus are covered with fluffy brown feathers.
They have very long necks.
Emus eat grass, fruits, flowers, seeds and
insects.
 To defend themselves they can kick with their two
legs.
 They can live up to 75 years.
Elephant
The biggest kind of elephant lives in Africa.
Another kind lives in places like India and
Thailand.
Elephants are the biggest animals living on the
land. They have very big legs and round feet.
They have short tails. Some elephants have big
teeth. Elephants have big ears that help them
keep cool. Elephants have long noses called
trunks. They use their trunks to suck up water, to
pick up food and to pat each other.
They eat only plants. They eat lots of plants
each day. Elephants drink lots of water each
day.
Elephants are the only mammals that can’t jump
 They live in big groups called herds.
 A baby elephant is called a calf. Its father is called a
bull and its mother is called a cow. A calf drinks its
mother's milk.
Frog
Frog is an amphibian. Frogs start their lives as
'eggs' often laid in or near fresh water. Frogs live
on all continents except Antarctica.
They have long legs, a short body, big eyes and
don’t have a tail. Frogs have very good eyes,
they can see in all directions. They are in
different colors.
They can jump and climb very high.
They eat insects like flies, mosquitoes and
dragonflies. Frogs don’t eat dead insects.
 Frogs don’t drink water they absorb it through their
skin.
 Frog bones form a ring, just like trees do. Scientists
can use these rings to figure out the age of a frog.
Rabbits
Wild rabbits are found in many places around
the world, in many habitats, including woods,
forests and deserts.
Rabbits have long ears and big back legs. Their
fur is very soft. They have small tails.
They eat plants.
Rabbits can run very fast.
 Rabbits are the most popular pets.
 They are also hunted for their fur and meat
Goldfish
There are hundreds of different kinds of fish that
can be kept as pets. Goldfish are the most
commonly pet fish because they live in cold
water and are kept in an aquarium.
Their body is “gold” and covered in scales. They
don’t have legs, they have fins.
Goldfish like all fish swim very fast.
They eat special fish food called flakes.
 Goldfish can't close their eyes - they sleep with their
eyes open usually at the bottom of the water.
 The world's oldest goldfish was 43 years old.
Hippo
A hippo lives on land and in the water. They stay
in the water in the hot daytime. Sometimes they
come out of the water to sleep in the sunshine.
At night when it is cool they come out of the
water to eat grass and plants.
A hippo has a very big mouth and teeth. It is a
very strong animal. Eyes, ears and nose are on
the top part of the head so that they can float in
the water and see, hear and breathe easily.
They can run and walk in the water.
 Hippos can run faster then men.
 They can stay under water for 30 minutes.
Chicken
The chicken is one of the most common
domestic animal. These are kept by people as a
source of food, with their eggs and meat. Adult
male chickens are known as roosters and
female as hens and younger chickens are
known as chicks
They can be in different colors. Their body is
covered with feathers.
Domestic chickens can’t fly for long distance.
Domestic chickens feed on seeds and insects
but wild chicken can eat even lizards and young
mice.
 Chicken take 21 days to hatch.
 Roosters may crow at any time of the day or night
but hens crow loudly after laying an egg.
