Turnage Spanish 2008 Unit 3: The AR Conjugation Handout The whole ER/IR thing In the present tense, as with many other tenses, the ER and IR take the same endings except for the pronoun nosotros. Therefore, if you wish to say, “they live,” although you would think it would be vivin, it is actually “viven.” >ER and IR verbs follow an e pattern >The Nosotros form uses the letter of the verb type. Ex. Nosotros vivimos Ex. Nosotros comemos The Yo Form Yo means I. Take off the ending in Comer, and add an o. Comer o= Como=I eat2 The Tú Form Tu is the informal way to say you. Take off the –ER in Comer, and add es. Comer es=Comes=You eat3 The Él/Ella/Usted Forms Usted means you (formally). Él means he. Ella means she. All of these take the same ending, an e. Therefore, it is easier for others to understand if you do use the pronoun in these cases. Vivir e=Vive=He/she/it lives The Nosotros Form 2 Remember that in Spanish the pronoun can be emitted 3 Note that the same goes for any IR verb. Simply use the E unless in the nosotros conjugation R. Turnage Spanish 2008 Unit 3: The AR Conjugation Handout Here’s where it may be a bit confusing. You must remember that the ER/IR verbs do not following the e rule. For any –ER verb, use –emos. For any –IR verb, use –imos. Ex. Comemos-we eat Vivimos-we live The Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes Form A simple way to remember this form is to simply add an n to the él, ella, and usted forms. Él come-Ellos comen Usted vive-Ustedes viven Pointers 1) Note that all third person forms are together with the same ending. There are two different endings for third person- singular and plural. 2) Take note that the e is repeated throughout the IR/ER conjugations. This rule applies to every pronoun except for Nosotros.
