Development
Turn to pg. 46 of the text. Geographer’s three prairie
levels within the Interior Plains. Show on map of Canada
where the levels are.
- first level
- mostly made up of Manitoba lowlands
- three large lakes – Lake Winnipeg, Lake Winnipegosis,
and Lake Manitoba
- lots of marshland especially around all the lakes in the
north, good farming land in the middle Red River Valley,
and then sudden change of elevation to the south.
- second level
- mostly made up of Saskatchewan plains
- Southwestern area has sparse vegetation and few trees,
centre area is the parkland with groves of aspen trees, and
mixed forests to the north.
- soils are good for farming and ranching at this level
- third – Alberta with higher elevation
- covers most of Alberta with flat areas, foot hills, deep
river valleys, and badlands
- Cypress Hills and Wood Mountain stand above the
plain
- some areas have good farming and ranching while other
areas require irrigation to grow anything
Does anyone have any questions about the three
different levels?
What is the climate like in the Interior Plains? add to
list on board as necessary
Climate
- distinct seasons
- winter cold and summer hot
- north is cold with more precipitation
Classroom
Management
Strategies

shouting out of answers
- try to get a response from
all students
- prompt students before the
question
- south is warmer with less precipitation
- extreme southwest is almost desert like
- Manitoba gets more rain than Saskatchewan and
Alberta
- 2/3 of the yearly precipitation falls in the spring and
summer
Look at the charts on pg 50. It displays temp verse rain
fall graphs in the three provinces.
- explain the highlights of the graphs
Does anyone have any questions about the climate of
the Interior Plains?
Where do you think the people of the Interior Plains
live?

of location
