Abstract
The current paper shows the results of the progressive relaxation training with imagery in two groups of schizophrenic patients and
a non-clinical sample (control group). Twenty patients diagnosed with schizophrenia and treated in a mental health center were
distributed into two different conditions: progressive relaxation training and control group. Antipsychotic and anxiolytic medication
was given to both groups. Anxiety (STAI), the psychiatric symptoms and the secondary effects of the medication were assessed.
The results show a significant decrease in anxiety symptoms and secondary effects of antipsychotic medication in the relaxation
group, as compared with the control group. Furthermore, no negative effects due to the use of relaxation training were observed.
Therefore, the capability of schizophrenic patients to respond positively to the relaxation training is verified, as well as the
usefulness of this kind of treatment to cope with this disorder.
