Abstract
The text offers a general image of the very important British social anthropologist Gregory Bateson, in the context of the historical
development of British social and cultural anthropology. Gregory Bateson is an important figure in the world history of
anthropology, but is very little known in Latin America (or in the Spanish speaking world in general). This work pays special
attention to his contributions to the development of field work methodology and to some anthropological sub disciplines, such as
psychiatric anthropology, and it draws attention to the interdisciplinary character of his anthropology. It is also mentioned that, as
opposed to the dominant trend in British social anthropology, he insisted on making use of the concept of "culture", relating it to
British social anthropology's principal theoretical concept: "social structure".
