Chemistry for the Health Sciences Laboratory
CH 207A, Fall 2009 Syllabus
Instructor: Dr. James McEvoy (Section 2)
Contact information: Science 318, [email protected], 303-964-5731
Office hours: MWF 10.30–11.20 am, T 12.15–1.05 pm. Please feel free to schedule an
appointment outside of these times.
Laboratory times and location:
Section 2: Tuesday 1.45–4.25 PM, Sci 307
Text: Catalyst Custom Laboratory Manual published by Pearson/Prentice Hall is available at
the bookstore.
Grading: Your overall grade for the course will be calculated according to the following:
Number Points Total points
Prelab assignments 12
25
300
Laboratory reports
50
600
12
Total course points
900
Prelab assignments: You must thoroughly read the experimental procedure and complete the
prelab assignment prior to the lab session. If you do not prepare for the lab in advance and
work on the prelab assignment beforehand, you will receive a score of zero on the prelab.
Laboratory reports: All laboratory reports must be completed and handed in at the end of
each laboratory period, unless otherwise stated. You will perform the laboratory experiments in
teams of two, and each student will submit their own laboratory report.
10 points will be
deducted from a report for each day that it is late.
Laboratory attendance is mandatory.
If you do not attend a lab, you will receive a score of
zero for both the prelab assignment and the laboratory experiment unless you have an excused
-1-
absence. Excused absences include a death in the family, jury duty, or a serious illness or
injury with a note from a health care provider (not a regularly scheduled appointment). NCAA
athletes/forensic team members: In the first week of class, please check your competition
schedule and let me know in writing which, if any, of the labs you have a time conflict in order
for the competition to be considered an excused absence. Whether any other absences are
excused is at the discretion of the instructor. Excused laboratory and prelab assignments will
be averaged out of your final grade.
Proper attire is mandatory in the laboratory. Safety glasses or goggles are required at all
times, unless a specific exception is made by the instructor. Closed-toe shoes must be worn
(no sandals, flip-flops, or Crocs), shirts must cover your shoulders, abdomen and lower back (no
camisoles or cropped shirts), and pants or long skirts must cover your legs (no shorts or short
skirts). If you are not dressed properly, you will not be allowed in the lab and will be sent home
to change.
Laboratory safety: No food or drinks, including chewing gum and water bottles, are allowed in
the laboratory. When working with hazardous chemicals wear disposable gloves and wash your
hands before exiting the lab.
Keep personal items such as backpacks and purses in an area
separate from the lab bench and hood.
Cleanliness: Please clean up after yourself in the lab. Do not leave chemicals spilled on the
counters, floors or balances. Please cap reagents when you are through with them, and wash,
dry, and store appropriately any glassware used during the lab.
Academic integrity policy: It is expected that you will act in an honest manner and with
integrity. In the unlikely event that cheating, plagiarism or academic misconduct occurs, it will
be handled as a gravely serious matter. A student who is caught cheating may receive either a
grade of F for the course or a zero grade for the prelab and lab, depending on circumstances.
Consistent with the College's Academic Integrity Policy, I will report all violations of this course's
academic integrity policy to the Dean's office. Students who have committed multiple instances
of academic dishonesty can be subject to institutional penalties like probation, suspension, or
expulsion, in addition to the penalties for this course. The Academic Integrity policy is described
-2-
in the Bulletin; detailed information about the policy and the appeals process can be found in the
Dean's office.
Disability Services: Regis University, in compliance with federal guidelines, is committed to
equal educational opportunity by assuring otherwise qualified students with disabilities equal
access to Regis University programs and activities that are provided to students without
disabilities. An otherwise qualified person with a disability is a student who meets the academic
and technical standards required for admission or participation in Regis University’s educational
programs and activities.
To ensure the provision of reasonable and appropriate services at Regis University, students
with disabilities must identify themselves in a timely manner to the Office of Disability Services
(ODS), Room 118B, Life Directions Center, 303-458-4941, [email protected], in order to be
eligible for requested accommodation(s). Current and comprehensive documentation must be
on file with ODS prior to approval of the accommodation. Following the meeting with ODS,
please make an appointment with me, as your professor, to discuss your accommodation
request in light of the course requirements. Please make arrangements with me in advance for
special accommodations. It is strongly encouraged that students self-disclose their disabilities at
the beginning of their academic experience because accommodations are not retroactive.
