NSF ADVANCE is designed specifically to enhance the recruitment, retention and promotion of women and underrepresented minorities in academic science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers. It also is intended to produce changes that make working for a university better for everyone. Institutions receiving these grants must implement complex organizational change strategies that promise to transform university/college structures, practices, and culture. Dr. Bird’s research focuses on the NSF ADVANCE Institutional Transformation program. Her presentation will provide an overview of ADVANCE approaches used at institutions nationwide and common outcomes associated with those approaches. Dr. Bird was previously a member (2003-2006) of a U.S. Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs partnership team between Kharkiv National University (Ukraine) and Iowa State University (USA). The team developed and implemented learning modules that focused on enhancing gender equity in Ukrainian society. She is a 2015 recipient of the Iowa State University Institutional Service Award and 2013 recipient of the American Association of University Women’s Distinguished Faculty Award. Dr. Bird serves on multiple advisory boards for NSF ADVANCE-Institutional Transformation Institutions, is an officer of the Sociologists for Women in Society Association, and is an active member of the American Sociological Association, the Society for the Study of Social Problems, the Southern Sociological Society, and Sociologists for Women in Society.
