The block diagram of the board is shown in Figure 1. It contains the ADF4106 synthesizer, a PC connector, a 10 MHz TCXO for the reference input, SMA connectors for the power supplies, and an RF output. There is also a low-pass loop filter (50 kHz) and a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO), Z-COMM V940ME03, on board. The evaluation board is set up for a 1 MHz PFD comparison frequency. A cable is included with the board to connect to a PC printer port. The package also contains Windows® software to allow easy programming of the synthesizer. PC Cable Diagram LOOP FILTER COMPONENTS 09144-002 Loop component values shown in the circuit diagrams (see Figure 5 and Figure 6) are for a 5.8 GHz RF output, a 2.5 mA CP current, a V940ME03 VCO, 1 MHz channel spacing, a 50 kHz loop bandwidth, a phase margin of 45°, and N equals 5800. Figure 2. Evaluation Board Silkscreen The board is powered from a single 9 V battery. The power supply circuitry allows the user to choose 3 V for the ADF4106 VDD and either 3 V or 5 V for the ADF4106 VP and VCO supply. The default settings are 3 V for the ADF4106 VDD and 5 V for the ADF4106 VP and VCO supply. The ADF4106 VDD should never exceed the ADF4106 VP. This can damage the device. The evaluation kit CD comes with a copy of the ADIsimPLL™ software that allows users to create new filter designs and model the frequency and time domain responses of these loops. This software also has a useful report and schematic option. All components necessary for LO generation are catered for onboard. The 10 MHz TCXO from Vectron provides the necessary reference input. The PLL is made up of the ADF4106, a passive loop filter (50 kHz), and the V940ME03 VCO from Z-COMM. The output is available at RFOUT through a standard SMA connector. Users can use their own power supplies and reference input. However, in this case, they need to insert SMA connectors as shown in the silkscreen (see Figure 2) and block diagram (see Figure 1). www.BDTIC.com/ADI Rev. 0 | Page 3 of 8 UG-159 Evaluation Board User Guide EVALUATION BOARD SOFTWARE SOFTWARE DESCRIPTION PROGRAMMABLE SOFTWARE SETTINGS The software is provided on a bundled installation CD. To install, use the following steps: To program the software, complete the following: 1. 2. 1. Double-click setup.exe. The install wizard installs the software. Note that administrator access is required on the PC to install the software. Follow the on-screen instructions. The software is installed to a default directory: C:/Program Files/Analog Devices/ ADF_Rev3.x. To run the software from this directory, double-click ADF_Rev3_x.exe. Any previous software revisions should be uninstalled. Prior to the Main Interface Page, a window appears, which prompts you to select the device to be evaluated. Choose the ADF4106 and the interface option, and then click OK. The Main Interface Page now appears (see Figure 4). 2. 3. Click RF VCO Output Frequency for the Output Frequency window to appear. Enter the desired PFD Frequency, in kHz, and click OK. Click REF IN Frequency and enter the desired frequency in MHz. To modify RF Charge Pump Current Setting 1 or RF Charge Pump Current Setting 2, click the corresponding text box and the current setting window will appear. The RF Prescaler settings can be changed the same way. At this point, the data is now set up, and the user can modify other features. Figure 4.
