INTRODUCTION
- Sea transport is a key service in Tuvalu due to its
geography. Composed of nine atolls. Tuvalu’s shipping
industry is a lifeline for outer – islands communities
- The increase in MARITIME ACCIDENTS are
threatening the country effort to maintain SAFE domestic
shipping services
- Tuvalu continues to list the safety of life at sea as the
major concern within the country.
6
DOMESTIC FLEET OPERATION AND
SAFETY
-Domestic services to outer islands are operated by government
shipping (Department of Marine & Port Services)

PROBLEMS WITH DOMESTIC SHIPPING
Lack of ACCESSIBILITY – (Outer Island) bad
weather, break down, high cost of fuel
• Access provides OPPORTUNITIES
• Without access there is no opportunity
• Clearly, the greater the access; the greater the
opportunity
• Adequate access can overcome the disadvantages of;
- Remoteness
- Isolation
- Lack of social and economic opportunities
12
HOW TO OVERCOME THIS PROBLEMS
• Provide access opportunity with better shipping
•
•
•
services
develop income earning opportunities in the outer
islands
attract tourism both to Funafuti and the outer islands
Enable people to travel to and from outer islands
when they want at a price they can afford, and in
comfort and safety

PORT INFRASTRUTURE
Funafuti is the main, albeit small, port. All ships visiting from
overseas call on the capital, and port is also the base of
operations for the inter – island passenger and cargo service
operated by Tuvalu government
Port facilities comprise a single L shaped pier, with the main
cargo berth having a length of about 80 meters and depth
alongside of 9 meters. Anchorage are available within Funafuti
Lagoon immediately off from the wharf
18
CHALLENGES
International shipping
Small market economy – low cargo volumes inbound,
less or no cargo outbound
High shipping freight rate
Shipping line services sometimes limited
to profitable route
Domestic shipping
-Providing regular and affordable shipping
services to outer islands
- High fuel cost limits trips
- Bad weather may prolong departure time
- Break downs
