George Move On ..................................................................................................... George, Dot Sunday (Reprise) ............................................................................................. Company “Art Isn’t Easy” Director’s Note No, it’s not. Producing art, and especially theatre in particular, is a constant barrage of “no,” and “you can’t do that,” and “can’t you do something easier?” and “why would you want to do that?” and “well, when [insert theatre name] did it before they just used....” I get it, doing shows is hard work. And the funding, as George in the second act of our show knows all too well, is more than half the battle. Our budgets have been cut so much in the past few years that it reminds me of the old saying, “We have done so much for so long with so little that we are now qualified to do anything with nothing.” And believe me, our staff here at Kennedy Theatre are absolutely qualified to do miracles with next to nothing. Even with all the cuts, somehow our design and tech teams manage to create amazingly otherworldly worlds, to take our student designers’ imaginations and set them in our tangible world. Their ability to create something from nothing, to “finish the hat ... where there never was a hat” deserves the overused word “awesome” because it actually does leave one in awe of their fortitude. Our student performers are also adept at picking up any challenge thrown to them. Sondheim is notorious for being some of the most difficult music in the musical theatre genre--so why shouldn’t we use this show as the bar, and have our students constantly push it upwards? We have some of the most talented people in the state studying in our department--our audiences will be very lucky to say, “I knew them when....” There are even immense roadblocks thrown up that prevent collaboration between departments-funding again, workloads, availability...thank you to Larry Paxton and Megan Mount for breaking through those obstacles and joining us in this homage to the creation of living, breathing, daring art. Usually the Director’s Note is a place to give some insight into the show, something along the lines of “Art is a metaphor for life.” Well, it is, but I also wanted to use my space to give recognition to our students, staff and faculty who work so hard for so long. They deserve far more kudos than I can possibly give them. They remind us everyday that there are... “so many possibilities....” Paul T. Note from the Dramaturg Georges Seurat (1859-1891) was a French painter admired by his contemporaries for his work with color theory. Seurat led the Neo-Impressionism movement with his technique known as Pointillism, which involves using tiny “points” of different color. These points are applied in patterns to form the overall image. Color theory suggests that these patterns trick the eye to create a brighter or more vibrant image. When Seurat died of illness at age 31, many thought Neo-Impressionism was dead but his work inspired artists such as Piet Mondrian and Wassily Kandinsky, both of whom practiced Pointillism. Sunday in the Park with George is a fictionalized portrait of Seurat at the time he was working on his masterpiece, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. The criticallyacclaimed Broadway production opened in 1984 and won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, two Tony awards for Design, a Tony nomination for the Best Musical, and many other awards. 2005 saw the first major revival in London and in 2008 that revival was transferred to Broadway. The show, as Sondheim intended, highlights the difficulties and hardships endured by those who pursue the creation of art; many have seen Sunday as an autobiographical statement by Sondheim, whose 2010 book of collected lyrics is titled Finishing the Hat.
