Lesson Plan 11 Time: 60 min Title: Introduction to Microbiology & Epidemiology Learning Expectations: 1. Define pathogens 2. Explain the different types of pathogens and water related diseases 3. Recognize how pathogens are transmitted Materials Required: F-diagram activities (optional) Topics and Key Points Time (min) 5 Learning Strategies 1. Introduction to Microbiology & Epidemiology Microbiology: study of microorganisms Epidemiology (study of the incidence and distribution of disease and prevention) Pathogens- disease causing organisms 2. Pathogens Pathogens- disease causing organisms Microbes are so small they are difficult to see even with an expensive microscope Viruses 0.2-5 microns Bacteria 0.02 – 0.2 microns Protozoa 4-20 microns Helminthes (worms, parasites) 40 – 100 microns 3. Water Related Diseases Waterborne- ingestion of contaminated water - intervention: remove or kill agents Water washed- contact with contaminated material - intervention: increase quantity and quality or water used Water based- infections caused by pathogenic worms - reduce contact with infected water and remove worms from water Water related- acquired from vectors (not water) whose life cycles depend on access to water - make water inaccessible to vectors, control insects, prevent insects from biting http//www.cellsalive.com/ howbig.htm 5 (Day 4-5) (Day 4-4) 20 Topics and Key Points Learning Strategies 4. Extent of Water Diseases % of diseases caused by poor water Numbers from various diseases Time (min) 5 5. Factors Affecting Disease Transmission Susceptibility- more susceptible include infants and young children, the elderly, and the already sick Infectious dose- the minimum number of organisms required to cause an infection 5 6. Impacts on Public Heath Burden on health care Poverty Human development Refer to poverty cycle 5 7. Transmission Routes 8. Review Reflection: Transmission Route Activity 10 5
