Macleans College - POLICIES & DIRECTIVES SECTION NO: 1100 POLICY NO: 1116 TITLE: SAFE SCHOOLS POLICY ISSUE DATE: ISSUE NO: PAGE: 21/02/03 1 1 OF 2 Hepatitis A, B and C RATIONALE: Macleans College is committed to a positive approach with the issue of Hepatitis as it is for any serious communicable disease. PURPOSE: To provide a supportive environment for and prevent unfair treatment of persons affected by Hepatitis. To ensure adequate measures are taken to reduce the chance of virus transmission in the school environment. To set out a commitment to Hepatitis and other disease prevention through appropriate health education in the school. GUIDELINES: It is recognised that people with Hepatitis are often healthy, and are able to work and study. Staff and students at any stage of Hepatitis infection do not pose a significant health risk to others in a school setting where adequate procedures are maintained. Thus, employment or enrolment at the school will not be affected by Hepatitis infection. Confidentiality of Hepatitis status of any member of the school community will be maintained at all times within the terms of the Notifiable Diseases Regulations. Hepatitis A is transmitted through the faecal-oral route; Hepatitis B and C are blood-borne viruses. Standard safety and hygiene procedures are in place for infection control. Note: Because of the probability of unknown infections, the standard safety and hygiene procedures must be applied universally in the school. Discussion and answering questions will be covered in an appropriate manner within the Health Education programme. Hepatitis B immunisation (of staff and students) will be encouraged. This policy will be discussed by staff and the Macleans College Board of Trustees annually to ensure continued awareness and understanding of the policy and procedures. nr/f/policies/sec1100/pol1116 Macleans College - POLICIES SECTION NO: 1100 POLICY NO: 1116 TITLE: SAFE SCHOOLS POLICY & DIRECTIVES ISSUE DATE: ISSUE NO: PAGE: 21/02/03 1 2 OF 2 CONCLUSION: By proper and appropriate procedures, those with infectious disease should be enabled to maintain full access to educational and employment opportunities, while the risk to others of infection is avoided by proper adherence to health, hygiene and safety procedures. nr/f/policies/sec1100/pol1116
