recommended that you read textbook chapters on each of these topics, e.g. Poulson, Economic
Development:Private and Public Choice)
Readings
Each assignment is divided into two parts. The first part of the ~ igrunent is required reading for all
members of the seminar. These readings are drawn mainly from the required text and provide an
overall swvey of the issue. The second part of the assignment involves journal articles that wtll be
assigned to individual members of the seminar. The student will be required to provide a one to two
page summary of the article to members of the seminar, and to make an oral presentation critically
evaluating the article. These journal articles explore controversial issues relating to the topic, involvmg
empirical as weJI as theoretical contributions.
