Currently, NOVA-TS reclosers are available at the 15 kV and 27 kV voltage classes. The maximum design voltage of the 27 kV recloser is 29.2 kv. 11. What is the BIL of NOVA-TS reclosers? 15 kV NOVA-TS - 110 kV BIL 27 kV NOVA-TS - 125 kV BIL 12. Is NOVA-TS included in the Kyle Classic Program? Not yet. But because Kyle adds new products to the Classic program each year, look for NOVA-TS to be included in the future. See Bulletin 91005 for Kyle Classic details. POWER INFORMATION 13. Where does the NOVA-TS mechanism gets its power from? The magnetic actuator in each recloser mechanism derives its operating power from the energy-storage capacitors located within each unit. These capacitors are charged by two 12-volt lead acid batteries located in the Form 5/TS recloser control. 14. Where does the Form 5/TS control gets its power from? As with other Kyle microprocessor-based recloser controls, a control power transformer is needed to provide power (120 Vac or 240 Vac) to operate the Form 5/TS control. 15.When must the batteries in the Form 5/TS control be replaced? The 12 Vdc control batteries have a life expectancy of 4 to 6 years. It is recommended that the batteries be replaced after 4 years. A battery test is included as standard in the Form 5/TS control. 8. What is the creepage distance of NOVA-TS? 15kV 27kV Terminal to Terminal mm (inches) 1052 (41.5) 1052 (41.5) Terminal to Ground mm (inches) 673 (26.5) 772 (30.5) 9. What is the rated continuous current of NOVATS reclosers? NOVA-TS reclosers can be specified with a 400 amp or 800 amp continuous current rating. RECLOSER INFORMATION 16.What mechanism is used in the NOVA-TS recloser? The NOVA-TS recloser relies on the same low-energy magnetic actuator mechanism used in other NOVA products. The magnetic actuator provides accurate, reliable opening and closing operations, including any required operations, without ac presence. 17.Is there an OPEN/CLOSE contact position indicator? 10. What is the rated symmetrical interrupting current of NOVA-TS reclosers? NOVA-TS reclosers can be specified with an 8.0 kA or 12.5 kA symmetrical interrupting current rating. 2 Each phase of the NOVA-TS recloser has a large visible OPEN/CLOSED position indicator located on the side of the sleet hood. Frequently-Asked Questions 18. How is control lockout indicated? Each phase has its own set of status LED’s on the Form 5/TS control front panel. The CLOSED red indicator illuminates when the control senses the recloser mechanism is in the closed position. The OPEN green indicator illuminates when the control senses that the recloser mechanism is in the open position. The green LOCKOUT indicator also illuminates when the recloser is open and a reclosing sequence is not in progress or when the lockout handle on the recloser mechanism is in the down position. 19. Will the yellow manual operating handle move to the down position upon sequencing to lockout? No. The yellow manual operating handle is only moved to the down position via a hotstick during a manual opening operation. If the control sequences to lockout, control lockout will be indicated on the the status LED’s on the front panel of the Form 5/TS control and the contact position indicator will indicate the recloser is OPEN, but the yellow manual operating handle will remain in the up position. Since the NOVA-TS includes a SCADA accessory option, the yellow handle must remain in the up position to all supervisory closing. Standard industry practice is to disable all closing (both local and supervisory) when the yellow handle is down. Therefore, the yellow handle on the NOVA-TS recloser remains up while in lockout to allow for supervisory closing functions. 20. Can you manually close the NOVA-TS recloser? No. Pushing the yellow operating handle to the up position will not close the recloser. All close operations are initiated by the Form 5/TS control. The yellow operating handle must be returned to the up position for the recloser to respond to a close signal from the CLOSE push buttom or from supervisory control. 21. Does the NOVA-TS recloser have SCADA capabilities? Absolutely. Just as the Form 5 control was designed with line automation in mind, the Form 5/TS control continues with dual communication ports, automation packages, and an updated database for easy implementation. APPLICATION INFORMATION 22.How do you make sure the three separate units open together (in certain operating modes) when you do not have them mechanically ganged? The Form 5/TS control continually monitors the open and closed position of the NOVA-TS recloser to ensure each phase is in its proper state. Actual limit switches are directly coupled to the mechanism and monitored by the control. Since the units are not mechanically ganged, the Form 5/TS control artificially gangs them for monitoring purposes. 23. Why are the trip settings all the same for three separate reclosers? Typical utility operating practice is to balance the loading as much as possible on a three-phase distribution feeder to minimize the power delivery losses. 24.Explain phase and ground trip. Why do they operate differently? B r i e f l y, phase trip corresponds to the actual load current through the conductor while ground trip is the unbalance of the three-phase currents. Ground tripping will trip all three phases below the phase trip minimum trip value since ground tripping can be the result of any unbalance on the system, including load unbalance, one or more open phases, or low magnitude ground faults. 25.Can you have three separate phase and ground trip settings? The use of multiple profiles can be used for multiple settings, but typical utility operating practice is to balance the loading as much as possible on a threephase distribution feeder to minimize the power delivery losses. 26. When in Mode B or C, why do we lock out all three phases on a ground current fault? In all modes, not only modes B and C, ground sensing remains the same. The performance of tripping all three phases for low magnitude faults for modes B and C is based upon the unbalanced current for a three-phase system. However, this does not mean that all ground faults will always trip three-phase. As an example, if a recloser is located where the available phase-to-ground fault is 8,000 amps and the ground/ phase minimum trip level is set at 200/400 amps r e s p e c t i v e l y, any ground fault from 400 amps to 8,000 amps will trip only the faulted phase, even if the phase time-current curve is faster than the ground time-current curve. It is only in the narrow band from 200 to 400 amps where a ground fault or system unbalance of any kind, not distinguishable by fault current magnitude, will trip all three phases. 3 NOVA-TS Recloser and Form 5/TS Control 27. How does the control know all three units are open/closed? The Form 5/TS control continually monitors the open a nd c los ed position of the NOVA-TS recloser through actual limit switches directly coupled to the mechanism. REFERENCE INFORMATION 28. What TCC Curves are available for the NOVA-TS control? The same TCC Curves available for the Form 5 control are also available for the Form 5/TS control. See Reference Data R280-91-34. 29. Is there any recommended maintenance of the NOVA-TS recloser? Because NOVA-TS reclosers are applied under widely varying operating and climatic conditions, service intervals are best determined by the user based on actual operating experience. However, N O VA-TS s olid-insulated vacuum interrupting reclosers should be inspected every six years. 30. What control is the NOVA-TS recloser designed to work with? The NOVA-TS recloser and Form 5/TS control must b e us ed t ogether. The NOVA-TS recloser is a unique three-phase Kyle recloser because it is designed to work solely with the Form 5/TS control due to its triple-single control functionality. 31. Can a NOVA-TS recloser be used with an existing Form 5 control? N o. T he Form 5/TS control has been specially designed for use with the NOVA-TS recloser. The standard Form 5 control does not have triple-single control functionality. 32. Can I use a NOVA1 recloser with a Form 5/TS control? No. The NOVA1 recloser is not compatible with the Form 5/TS control. Though very similar, the NOVA1 and NOVA-TS reclosers have different operating mechanisms. This requires different electrical signals be sent to the respective controls for monitoring and response purposes. Just as the NOVA-TS and Form 5/TS control are an integral unit, so are the NOVA 1 recloser and NOVA1 control. See Bulletin Number 99016 for more information on the NOVA 1 system. 4 33.Can I use a NOVA-TS recloser with a NOVA1 control? No. The NOVA-TS recloser is not compatible with the NOVA1 control.
