6 : WHAT IS THE ATOMIC THEORY
?
■ Atom: smallest unit of an element that maintains the properties of that element.
■ Atomic theory : scientific explanation of the structure of atoms and how they interact with other atoms.
■ At the center of an atom is a small, dense core called the nucleus, which is surrounded by
electrons.
■ Proton : a positively ( + ) charged particle found in the nucleus of an atom.
■ Neutrons: particles found in the nucleus, but a neutron has no charge.
■ Electrons are negatively ( - ) charged particles.
■ Electron Clouds :
■ Element:
area around the nucleus that electrons move.
a type of matter made of just one kind of atom.
■ Molecule: made up of two or more atoms joined together chemically.
■ Compound : substance formed by atoms from two or more elements.

■ Wave :
Science Department
Grade: 5
LESSON
1 : WHAT IS SOUND ?
a disturbance that transmits energy.
- Sound is a series of vibrations traveling in waves.
■Vibrations :
back-and-forth movements of an object.
- All sound vibrations travel in compression waves.
- As a compression wave moves, molecules of air or other matter are pushed together, or compressed.
- The molecules spread apart, and sound energy moves away from its source as this bunching and spreading of
molecules repeats.
■Pitch : the highness or lowness of a sound .
■ Frequency : the number of vibrations that occur during a unit of time.
- High-pitched sounds have high frequencies.
- Low-pitched sounds have low frequencies.
■ Volume :
■ Crest :
The loudness of a sound.
Each high point of a wave .
■ Trough:
Each low point of a wave .
■ Wavelength : The distance from one crest to the next .
■ Amplitude:
describes the amount of energy in a wave.
- Loud sound  large amplitude
- Soft sound
 small amplitude.
■ Sound can only travel if there are particles that the waves can cause to vibrate.
■ If there are no particles to move, then sound cannot travel.
■ The speed at which sound waves pass through solids, liquids, and gases has to do with how
their particles are arranged.
■
Sound travels through gases more slowly than it travels through liquids and solids.
